http://www.pcinspector.de/emaxx/uk/welcome.htm has a program that will securely wipe the hard drive, but I think you have to burn it to CD - it is FREE however.
It also takes quite a bit of time, when I run it, I let it go overnight.

Put in the disk for your current operating system, and you should see easy menus that lead to a format option. You need to format all your partitions (except one, which you can never delete as it is used to turn your computer on) and delete them also, leaving one partition "c:/". Then vista should install properly. You need your current OS disk remember!

Hi
Ok first you talk about 4 OS at the same time , ME ,XP , NT and VISTA , now depending on wish you are going to install , you need to have the OS cd bootable, now once you boot from it , you need to get to the part of partitioning HD . But like i said it depends on the OS you want to install , go here www.bootdisk.com . Now VISTA has partition manager very good and XP too

First of all, if you bought a computer with ME installed on it there is now way it will work with vista unless you did some serious upgrading. Anyway, to format your hard drive you can go into My Computer on your desktop and right click on your C:\ drive and click on format. You can also get into your command prompt and type in "fdisk" and follow the instructions. If you have a really, really strong magnet you can erase the whole thing by sticking your hard drive to it.

Get out your XP Install CD and boot from it. At a very early stage, you are going to be prompted to do whatever you want to do with the partitions. Drop any you want to drop. Then, create new ones that are what you want. After that, format (quick if you don't want to wait long) your partition(s). Finish reinstalling XP.
