my brakes are a cantilever brakes. theylook like V shaped. the problem is that when ever i press te brakes it does not stop the tire hard!

screw out the barrel adjuster on the brake lever a bit. dont go too far, about 1/2 inch. if this doesnts resolve it, then reset the adjuster and unscrew the bolt near the caliper that holds the cable in place. pull the cable through a little farther and tighten that bolt again. play with the barrel adjuster again to get it nice and tight. if its still not stopping then get new pads. go to a bike shop and pay $15 for a pair and you'll be glad you did. they are much better than the walmart crap.

dont screw with safety, take it to a bike shop
