RCT is Root Canal Therapy or Root Canal Treatment. A root canal is performed when the nerve of a tooth is damaged. It can be compared to having a rotten core in an apple. You can remove the core and the apple will be left healthier. It usually takes one to two appointments and the actual root canal should be painless. Sometimes you can have pain afterwards because it takes awhile for the infection to completely be gone from the surrounding tissue and bone.

Go ahead and brush, maybe not floss depending on where the temporary filling is. Making it "nicer" could mean a more permanent filling material, but most likely means a crown. If it is a front tooth a porcelain jacket crown (PJC) is a nicer choice than a porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crown. You will have to be careful biting in to things with the PJC but it will look more "real". If he only puts a filling in it, that will be temporary. When you remove the nerve and the blood supply from within the tooth, it gets you out of pain, but over time it also makes the tooth brittle and sometimes they discolor, so you will have to have a crown eventually. Better sooner than later. I have seen so so many people pay for the RCT and then never get the crown and the tooth starts chipping away and eventually breaks down beyond repair. So now they have lost the tooth and the $$ they put in to the RCT. So borrow the $$ if you have to and get the PJC, you wouldn't want to lose a front tooth! Be sure to ask questions, and you can write them down ahead of time if you think you'll get nervous and forget. It's their job to answer your questions, if you feel more comfortable talking to the Dental Assistant, they should be fully capable of answering your questions, or finding an answer if they don't know it. Good luck

Root Canal Treatment. It is when they take the nerve out of the tooth and fill it back with an inert filling material called Gutta Percha. When you see the tooth on an x-ray, it looks like a bright white line going down the middle of the root.

Not something you want to hear. They are about 85% effective but worth it it saves your tooth. Had 2 root canals on same tooth when I was 11 then 15 years later.
