i'm a pet grooming salon manager and i learned that due to the different ph levels in dogs skin, they should only get a bath 1 in every 4 to 6 weeks. between baths, i use a lot of pet cologne and baby wipes. the baby wipes are a pretty efficient alternative. i also warn my clients that if you over bathe your dog, he'll smell worse and the odor returns more quickly due to the damage to the skin.

It is not good to bathe a dog any more often than once a week. Their oil glands are not like ours and if you give them a bath too often they will end up with skin problems the rest of their life and that smell really bad. Make sure you only use shampoos for dogs and be sure you get all of the soap out of their fur and skin or this will cause problems also.

It really depends on what type of dog you have and how often he needs it. The texture of your dog's coat - and also how oily his coat gets - determines how often you should bathe your dog. Some breeds tend to have oilier skin and need to be bathed more often. Other breeds, who have thick double coats, need to be bathed less often. And your dog's habits matters too. If you have a dog that spends a lot of time outdoors rolling around in the dirt, then you'll have to bathe him more frequently. The most important thing is to use a shampoo that is specially formulated for dogs as human shampoo can be too harsh for your dog's skin.
Breeds prone to oily skin and other skin conditions, such as Cocker Spaniels, benefit from regular bathing about every four weeks. Breeds with a thick, double coat, like huskies and chows, only need bathing about 3 or 4 times a year. Washing a dog with an undercoat more often than this can make the coat softer and less waterproof and insulating.

Every 4 weeks is safe, because you won't dry the dog's skin out but you will be able to keep her clean and soft. As a dog groomer employee, I tell people that dogs can be bathed about every 4 weeks to maintain beautiful, silky, and soft. Just be sure to use a gentle shampoo (like oatmeal based or an herbal based dog shampoo) and NEVER use human shampoo. Dry the dog slowly, preferably without a blowdryer, and brush the fur the opposite direction the furs grows, and then brush it back in the same direction the fur grows in. This allows natural oils to make their way to the fur and even out (not staying near the skin getting greasy).
I hope I help!!

I've heard once a month. Thats what I do for my dogs. They usually start smelling bad before that. But I think that anything sooner than that would dry their skin out.

the very most i reccomend bathing even a smelly dog is once a week, and if you are going to do that i suggest a soap free shampoo, and conditioner if the coat is long.
remember to brush and comb both before and after EVERY bath to avoid mats.
there are about 15 show dogs in my care and we bathe them weekly and the night before a show. they have perfectly healthy skin.

Bathing more than once a month will probably dry out your dog.

If you dog gets to stinking pretty quick I would say every couple weeks would be ok. Just don't use a very harsh shampoo.
