STOP SMOKING CIGARETTES.
I'm SERIOUS. Customers don't like employees who smoke.

I'm assuming your a waitress?? I have to tell you what turns me off so bad about waiter/waitresses is when they grab the money from me and it's obvious that I'd need change, they say, "Do you need change??" I always say yes and don't give a tip. It's pompus and presumptuous that I"ll be giving a tip.
I know all about tips. I'm a hairstylist and get good tips. I believe that a tip is exactly what it is. I don't get all upset like some co-workers that I've worked with in the past who have been really upset if they only get a dollar or two tip! People give you a tip out of the goodness of thier hearts. If they can afford it, it's wonderful to know that they appreciate me that much to give me that extra few dollars..if they can't afford it and they are happy with what I've done and are appreciative, that's tip enough for me. It's not something that HAS to be given.
I don't know you and I'm not trying to be rude or critical here but check your attitude...you say that you are as friendly and as hilarious as you can be. Is it possible that you are trying too hard?? Being overly friendly or trying too hard to be funny?? People may percieve that as being fake and noone likes to see that. Ask the other staff if there may be something about you that you can change to help yourself. Take it as constructive critisism and do what you can to change. Don't be offended by what they may tell you....remember that you're asking for help to help yourself be a better person...not how to get better tips. This will come when you've learned to right what you may be doing wrong.

Unless I go to a comedy club, I don't expect the people providing me with customer service to be "hilarious".
When I tip big, it's because the service was so quiet, yet timely and un-intrusive, that I didn't even know they were there. I am completely annoyed by chatty servers who pretend they are my friend, when they don't even know me. (the worst is when they actually **sit down in the booth next to you!!!***)
The biggest tips my husband and I leave are for the servers who are quiet and pretty much invisable, yet somehow see us and appear the split second our glass is low, or when our plate is empty, without us having to wave to get their attention.
It also helps if the servers can actually answer questions about the menu, instead of saying things like "I don't know, they use some kind of mix, I'm not sure what's really in it." C'mon! if you work there, you should know what the hell is in the food!!!
and finally, this may be a pet peeve, but I'm betting other restaurant customers would agree, but there are a few things that we definitely do NOT want to hear from our servers:
1. "Eeeeuuuw. Are you sure you want to order that? 'cause I tried it, and I don't like it, like totally gross!"
2. "did you notice our diet selections?"
3. "woooo weeee! you were hungry, weren't you!"

I always tip at least 15% regardless but I tip more if the person is courteous, friendly, and engaging with my children, but not too pushy and annoying. If you are so friendly that it gets annoying or you are telling corny jokes, people will be turned off by you. Also, I have had servers that were as friendly as could be but not very attentive. The customer should never have to call you when they need something. But don't come over and linger just pass by and ask if they need anything and leave them to their company. Another thing is possibly where you work. You haven't given many details but if you are working at a diner, cafeteria, or buffet, people don't tip as much at those places. In that case reconsider where you're working.

I tip for service which is provided in a friendly, and timely manner. I always tip 15% at the minimum, but usually 20% if the service is good. On the few occassions I've received bad/horrible service, I tipped 10%, and informed the manager of why I will no longer eat at their restaurant.

I generally want to tip a server who is friendly but who also leaves me alone most of the time and lets be eat and/or have a private conversation with my friend. It is a fine line: be personable but also realize that the customer did not actually come to interact with the server.

I tip regularly unless the service was really poor, but I will tip more if I can tell someone's goal is to ensure that I have a good experience. Provide the type of service that you would like to get.

I tip if I get good service. I like my waiter/waitress to always coming back and ask if everything is ok, refilling my water when it's almost empty, making sure my steak is how I like it and it's not too rare, greeting, smiling, not being cocky or sassy if I need something else, like kechup, shoyu, or anything else, even if she walking back and forth a lot.
