I'm either really depressed and thinking about suicide or super happy, like today. It scares me and has been going on for awhile now. Sometimes the happiness/sadness lasts for a week and switches dramatically... and very quickly. Could this be a sign of depression? A few years ago during my parents divorce and while I was picking who I wanted to live with I was put on Prozac for about a year. I'm still convinced I just wanted to be depressed and it it was a placebo. I go to therapy, but not often anymore. I was doing "much better." I'm not even sure what I'm asking but does anyone have advice or experience feeling this way?

I have seen a psychiatrist various time... which is how I got the prozac. I see various counselors in school. One really helps and sees/understands the real me. She believes I do not have any disorder, especially Borderline PD which I am almost 100% sure my mother has after reading a mother/daugther relationship book with a person who has BPD. My real therapist believes I am not bipolar. Is it possible me not having it could have changed within a few months? How does one "develop" it? Or is it possible that I'm just a normal 17 year old girl?

about getting a new psych. i think that might help. my current one, who i rarely see, doesnt seem to truly care. she asks the questions she needs to ask and i give the answers that she wants to hear... usually theyre honest...

Ughhh ALSO. I had extreme withdrawl symptoms when getting off of Prozac. While on vacation with my best friend and her family, so really, more meds would be the last thing I would EVER want to do.

Well i am sure that some people would say that you are depressed. That may be true but some times it's false and it could be something else. I have been the same way latley, but dont give up. All of this may be happening to you if you have a secret that you need to tell. Like for the last couple of years my brother was very depressed until like a month ago when he decided to come out and tell us that he was gay. And he found out that there was no reason to be scared to tell us. I AM NOT saying you are gay but i am saying it might be because of a secreat that you need to tell. Or you could still be tring to get over your parents devorce, that could be it to. Some people will think that they are over some thing but they find out that they are not and dont they know what to do.But that does not mean give up keep tring. When my parents got a devorce i had to go throu therapy because i was angrey at every one. i was really rud to my mom but the therapy did not work cause i never talked to the doctor i just sat in his office. it was just somthing that i had to resolve in my head and i did. i would try to talk to a person that is really close to you and just tell that person every thing that is going wrong cause some people feel better if thay just vent. Or try doing some thing that is very calming or relaxing to you once a week, like running or just sitting at home alone and watching your favorite movie. Some time people just need time to think to then selfs to try to resolve problens in their head that is what you do when you dream so you might not be getting enought sleep and that might be it too, that you dont resolve your problens in your mind. i dont know if i answered your questions or if i helped at all but i hope it all works out for you so good luck.

This could be situational depression. It could be a form of Bipolar Disorder. It could be any other number of mood disorders. If counseling was resulting in benefits, I recommend that you start back with therapy. I assure you that if you were prescribed Prozac by a licensed, professional doctor, you were not issued a placebo by the pharmacy. You would probably benefit from being on medication again, please see a psychiatrist rather than your regular medical doctor for a proper diagnosis and plan of treatment.

If you are really depressed, it's not always easy to make a choice to "just get better" "just pull out of this" etc. - especially if it's situational or bipolar related. The drastic mood swings are indeed an indication of a chemical imbalance.

Please seek treatment, because with it - you can feel better. And don't be so hard on yourself - it's not always easy to just "get over it". Best wishes to you.

What you are describing fits the clinical checkpoints for bipolar disorder (used to be called manic-depressive). It's not unusual for a doctor to see only the depression side and prescribe anti-depressants. I strongly suggest you let your therapist and/or doctor know about your mood swings. There are several medications that can help ease the symptoms of bipolar disorder. Also, it is not unusual for people with that disorder to talk oneself into believing that things are better, that you don't need the meds, that you don't have a problem. If the doctor prescribes another medication to help with this, please be patient as it can take 4-6 weeks for some meds to really kick in. No, you won't feel "high"; as a matter of fact you may not notice any change until all of a sudden you realize that the yo-yo up and down moods have decreased.

Sounds like you could have depression or perhaps bipolar. I would definitely go to a Dr. to get evaluated as it could be so many things and fortunately there are so many great treatments for just about everything. I had a very close Friend suffer from bipolar and she felt exactly how you described and it her moods were just up, down and all over the place...she felt very out of control and as her friend it was completely heartbreaking to feel so helpless to help her feel better. Some medication did the trick and stabilized her moods and knock on wood she has been great ever since. Get some help...it is not worth trying to go at it on your own when there are so many options out there to help you and whatever it may be that you are suffering with. Good luck!

There are a lot of things that are going on in your life that could cause this. Divorce is not an easy thing. It puts you in the middle and lays a lot of pressure on you. Trying to choose who you want to live with is an almost impossible task. There is no way you are going to please everybody, especially yourself. You should talk to your therapist and tell him about the mood swings. There are many more things out there besides Prozac. One drug just doesn't work for everybody. You could have a bit of bi-polar intefering with your life too. Don't try to handle this yourself. If you aren't comfortable with your therapist, get a new one. Your life and future are at stake.

It sounds like you are bipolar. check out bipolar.com, I think there is even a quiz you can take and then print it out and take to your dr. Also maybe try a different psychiatrist.
