Mackerel tabby cats can range from brown to orange to silver to blue to black. It's really not so much the color that defines the mackerel, but the striping on the cats body.

The mackerel is the most common of tabby cats and can be easily identified by the vertical stripes along the sides of the cats body. They may not be solid stripes and can appear broken and spotted on the flanks. Another sign is the striping on the head which often looks like the letter 'M' but this common among all types of tabby cats (i.e. classic and ticked are the other two types of these cats).

Classic tabby cats have a whirly pattern with thicker stripes than a mackerel. Their flank usually presents a pattern that is similiar to a bulls-eye.

Ticked tabby cats are bit a more salt and pepper as the hair of these cats acutally produces differing bands of color.

Mackeral refers to the stripes in a tabby that appear more like swirls rather than stripes. Mackeral tabbies are also known as classic tabbies.
