I have a two year old retriever who got constant ear infections until we started using an ear cleansing solution after each exposure to water. I also check his ears weekly. Any redness, itching, rubbing of his head on the carpet, shaking of his head, or that familiar infection smell will prompt me to use the solution. The vet said it could be used once a week for healthy ears. I use it only if I see something coming on. He has not had any infections in a long-time (knock wood). The cleaner we use is called Ear Cleansing Solution from VET Solutions. My dog hates the solution when dropped directly into his ear. For maintenance use I put it on a cotton ball and swab out the ear for his comfort. If he has an active infection I do drop right in the ear and then give copious praise afterwards. They do have a powder but I am not sure how good that is. I would be cautious about putting anything in your animal's ears that was not vet recommended. Good luck.

I have goldens and chronic ear infections can be a problem. First and foremost, clean your dog's ears with the Oticlens at least once a week and more often if they get dirty. Clean ears after any time playing water - water in the ears can trigger an infection. If your dog has any allergies, get them under control. Allergies can also trigger ear infections. I have one dog that has seasonal allergies and every spring he'll get an infection if we don't stay on top of it. Finally, your vet is charging a fortune for the care you are getting. A trip to the vet for an ear infection usually costs me $60-70 including the same meds you got. ADDITIONAL DETAILS - Definitely change the food. Pedigree will definitely trigger allergies. I used to feed Eukanuba - not the best food - but did not trigger allergies in my dogs. But several years ago, I switched to California Natural which is far better quality and is specifically formulated for allergic dogs. This has been an excellent food for my dogs and no more food allergies ever.

I have a curly retriever that gets ear infections all the time. I was taking her back to the vet constantly and she was always on antibiotics and drops. Now I make sure I clean her ears with a face washer in some warm salty water usually ever 2 weeks just to get rid of the dirt that accumulate. I also got a solution from the vet that I squirt in her ears once a month to help keep them clean. When I take her swimming I make sure that the rivers or dams don't have any algae and always dry her ears well afterwards

I have hounds,they were shaking ears so hard, I used R 7
from farm store,it has a cleaner, apply and follow with med. cost
8 dollars ,Now to the cause ,I had a sparrow problem, they are infested with mites, the close lilac bush their hang out,That is how
my dogs got those mites that are in skin causing problem, trip
to vet first cost 100 dollars/I found the R 7 with the help of friend.
Here is how you can tell. There will be dark residue in ear, take a swab not deep just in the ear,now place this on white napkin, using Magnifying class you will see little red specks moving-They are mites/they also cause mange on dogs, they get
under skin and makes hair fall out/dog scratches all time/the R 7
stopped the dogs from flopping ears--3 days ear clean ,Oh yes sparrows no longer welcome here.

I found that Hy-Octic ear rinse w/Hyaluronic Acid works awesomely !I found this at PetCo for $10.99 for 4 oz. She had bad ear infections very frequently and I bought this stuff and put 3 drops in both ears 3x a day and massaged them for a couple minutes each time, after she shook out the excess I dried her ears w/cotton balls. After a few days it was improved! After about 10 days it was gone. I now put it in her ears 2X a week and most definately after EVERY bath.

well, as it happens i just brought my 4 year old Rottie to the vet on saturday. He "had" an ear infection - only one ear, brown nasty stuff inside. Anyway it didnt claer up - this time they looked at it with a probe they put inside his ear and took a slide & examined - its a yeast infection! Have different meds now, maybe it will clear up this time. E mail me if you have more questions

We had a little jack russel....that had ear infections so bad...her ears would bleed....dig them so much she had bald ears....took her to the vet all the time....had to clean her ears out daily and put medication in them...had a cyst in her ear....but the vet said he could remove it but it would just grow back....needless to say it was horrible....we really got to the point we thought we might have to consider putting her down just to give her relief....finally someone suggested we try an organic dog food....said she might have chemical sensitivities....well because I myself have this problem....I didn't see the hurt in trying....put her on Paul Newman's Organic dog food....Her ears totally cleared up!....We couldn't believe it....after all those years of trauma....we were so excited to share the good news with our vet....and he pretty much just dismissed it....whatever....we know what we know....and now we have a happy dog....so maybe this is your dog's problem too....just a suggestion....good luck.

Make sure that after you bathe your dog that you clean out his ear with the towel for extra water. Allow him to shake his head also after a bath. The vet has a solution that you squeeze in the ear and it dries the ear out and also cleans it! They will also tell you how to get that extra stuff out of it. Ask for medications also!
