Russian Assasin: No, im not kidding.. do i sound like im kidding... its a straight forward question... im curious about it.... is that so wrong?

Can people not just tell me, instead of telling me to read the Bible? The question popped into my head earlier, isnt Y!A a place for people to have their questions answered? Saying "read the Bible" doesnt help.

Firstly, that clearly didn't happen as the likes of semantic drift and diachronic change clearly explain distinct languages and to believe literally in the Tower of Babel is like creationism, i.e. anti-Christian. If there was no communication between Britain and America, eventually we'd be speaking different languages and that's how it happens. Having said that, my interpretation of the story is that human arrogance defeats itself and is no substitute for divine guidance, sort of "pride comes before a fall". A parallel has also been made between humans attempting to build a tower up to Heaven in the Old Testament, and God successfully building a bridge down to Earth in the person of Jesus Christ. However, that´s clearly a Christian interpretation and i have no idea what Jews or Muslims think about the story.

Languages develop in isolation. When people have little contact with the people next door, their languages go in different directions. You can date languages by how alike or different they are.

New languages develop, new accents and dialects develop. The evolution of language is one of the best documented and understood processes in the world. English has evolved dramatically in the last 1500 years from the development of Old English through Middle English to the emergence of Modern English at the time of Shakespeare. Old English would be incomprehensible to modern English speakers and spoken Middle English would not be much more intelligible.

Some languages such as Tok Pisin in Papua New Guinea are less than 100-150 years old.

Clearly mentioned in the Bible that God confused languages so that the people could not do mischief together. Now this is now possible for us to come together to produce great things. This is because certain languages have gained worldwide popularity. Like the English we write and speak. So huge a number of people who know English and are learning English. So great a thing that as predicted in the Bible to wage war against God. Of course, the total and complete defeat is predicted.

According to the narrative in Genesis Chapter 11 of the Bible, the Tower of Babel was a tower built by a united humanity to reach the heavens. God, observing the unity of humanity in the construction, resolves to destroy the tower and confuse the previously uniform language of humanity, thereby preventing any such future efforts. The destruction is not described in Genesis, but is mentioned in the Book of Jubilees, and elsewhere (see 'Destruction', below). An interpretive account of the story explains the tower's destruction in terms of humankind's deficiency in comparison to God: within a Judeo-Christian framework, humankind is considered to be an inherently flawed creation dependent on a perfect being for its existence, and thus the construction of the tower is a potentially hubristic act of defiance towards the God who created them. As a result, this story is sometimes used within a Judeo-Christian context to explain the existence of many different languages and races.

You will find the answer, I believe it's the old Testament, around the time of the building of the Tower of Babylon.

God didn't like humans trying to build a Tower reaching to Heaven, so he created the different languages.

The Bible can explain fully for your complete information gathering.

Why did God create automobiles and money and shoes and baby strollers and digital cameras and buildings and things that go bump in the night????

Man created language. This is also part of evolution.
