It's very hard to walk up to a girl you don't know, especially if you are shy. You might just want to try and walk up to a girl and say hi. Then you might want to ask leading, open ended questions to find out if you and her have anything in common.
It's easier said than done - and a lot of girls WILL shoot you down, so you're feelings may get hurt more than once.

say, Hello. Compliment them on their hair or something nice. Ask if you can buy them coffee or some other popular drink. Then after small talk about an event or movie you both want to see. Ask for her number. Later call and see if she wants to go to the event or movie with you.

OR JUST GO UP TO A GIRL THATS HANDY AND ASK THEM IF THEY KNOW OF ANY ROOMATES OR FRIENDS THAT WOULD LIKE TO MEET A CHEMISTY STUDENT OR WHATEVER YOU ARE STUDYING. THE FIRST POSITIVE PROSPECT ( VISIT, WALK,TALK,STUDY TOGETHER, AND DOWN THE PIKE KISS,HUG ETC. ) TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR FAMILY ETC.

well for starters as yew said yew do not wanna look like a freak so yew should try casualy bumping in to them, or letting them know yew are looking at them(not literally) body language says it all, just let them notice yew noticing them...lol....then just see howw it goes

play dumb..pretend like you dont know where something is and have them walk you there then when you get there say "hey thanks...do you want to hang out sometime..you seem really nice" then get her digits!
