The Army.
The reason I'm saying that is not because in the Army, but because the Coast Guard, being so small, would be very limiting. The Coast Guard, being so much smaller than the Army, offers less jobs to choose from, less slots in those jobs, and less chances for career advancement.
If you're serious about the armed forces, I would look toward the Army, Navy, or Air Force for the job fields you're interested in. Since you have an associates in IT, you probably won't have a lot of trouble qualifying for the type of job you are interested in, and there are many IT related jobs in all three of the branches I listed above.

It really depends on personal preference as all branches offer many similar occupational specialties. What you should look at is benefits, retirement and the pace of promotions, or how fast you'll be promoted. The Army is going to be a more rugged, out doors type of situation and the coast guard is obviously going to be dealing more with port and shore security and other things of the like. These are important things to consider when joining the service. If you want to live in and eat dirt (it's not as bad as it sounds, I promise!) the army will suit you. If you don't then you should probably join the coast guard.
As a soldier myself I feel compelled to tell you to join the Army. I love everything about the Army and I feel it has been a very powerful force in making me into the man I have become today. You may also want to look into the Air Force, as they have the best living conditions, posts and pay incentives out of all of the branches of service.
Regardless of which you choose to join the important fact is that you've chosen to serve. Only 2% of the people in our nation are in our all volunteer military. Essentially, we 2% defend our countries citizens, freedoms and beliefs. That's a very noble aspect of the job. I think you're making a good choice that will bring major changes to how you view yourself, your life and the nation you call your own. Thank you for your noble decision!!

Go Navy. Why? You said you had an I.T degree, and the Navy does alot of computer related stuff. You could put your degree to use and possibly get another degree if you study while underway. You get to be alot more "involved" in world affairs than in the Coast Guard, yet you are still reasonably safe. Navy has alot more career fields than just about any other branch. That's my 2 cents.

If you want to hold a gun and shoot and fight etc for whatever reason the army is better. The coast guard is definately safer anyway(keep all your hands, feet, eyes intact). Im 17 almost 18 and i've actually been thinking strongly about joining the army. For me it would have to be the army since I want to fight and I don't have a degree in anything.

my husband is in the army.So i have lots of experience with those soldiers. I can tell you that the army takes everybody! felons, ect. I think the coast guard can be just as dangerous as the army. This may sound silly, but watch the movie called "The Guardian" with Ashton Kutcher, it gives you an idea about that job. Are you a good swimmer, ect? Dont go to recruiters though, because they say whatever it takes to get you in! Instead try to take to soldiers in each area, try chat rooms and military.com is a good site to check things out.good luck, signing your life to the government is a huge decision

neither...MARINES baby. All the way.
think about it, over the last many years, the army, coast guard, air force and navy have all changed their slogans from one thing to the next, the Marines have always had one:
The Few, The Proud, The Marines
No one compares. Period.
