how do i convince my family i have asthma. i keep trying to tell them but they dont listen. i also need help telling my parents that them smoking in the house, the fact we have a cat but im allergic to her (i take allergy meds) and the polution in the environment all play into asthma. i want them to listen to me because i cant run far without having to gasp for air but there like "your 14, if u had asthma we would know by now" i really need help because the symtoms only get worse and i think i need an inhalor because my last episode was so bad my nurse sent me to the ER to get me stabilized. but even then they wouldnt believe me my dad said "anyone can fake an asthma attack. u just did it better then most ppl do" im scared and i know i have asthma and i know it will only get worse if im untreated. HELP!

If it's that desperate of a situation, I would talk to the school nurse earnestly about your concerns (not necessarily at a time when you're sick, just ask to speak to her about a health concern), see if she concurs with what you think and then she can help convince your parents to have to examined.

If it's possible, maybe have a friend or another family member take you or take public transportation to a general practitioner. You don't have to have your parents there to be seen. Make an appointment yourself, make sure you have your insurance information written down or the card photocopied and then the Dr. can assess you and you can tell your parents once you have a diagnosis.

I'm sorry your parents aren't listening to you... I don't know what the laws are where yoyu live, but in NY every student has to have a physcial by a physycian in 7th and again 10th grade and this is partly the reason why. Good luck, feel better.

Get your parents to take you to a Dr. If they won't listen...which it sounds like may be the case...reach out for help to another family member that doesn't live in the house (i.e. aunt, uncle, sibling, grandparent, etc.). If all else fails...perhaps talk to your school nurse. I would also try your school guidance counselor. I am not sure how they test asthma...but sounds like you need to prove it to your parents to give them a much needed wake up call. You may be just be allergic to smoke as well or have asthma...regardless you shoudl see a Dr. Nevertheless I hope that your parents can keep their smoking habit outside, that is if they are unable to quit. It is hard to do believe me...but your health should come first as far as your living conditions go over their selfish desire to continue their snoking habit. Good luck and get some help from someone that can intervene for you!

Go to the 'school nurse' and tell her that you are 'afraid' you have asthma ... and also tell her that your parents both smoke and that you have a cat that you are allergic to ... and also tell her that you have tried to 'talk to' your parents but that they 'don't believe you' ... but BE PREPARED, because you may not have asthma at all, but you may have a 'mental health issue' and may need to be seen by a counselor for that.

Have your llung capacity tested as well as asthma tested. Ask for an inhaler if your parents are that irresponsible about your help. If worst comes to worse, talk to your therapist or to your doctor about your parents' arrogance. They've taken a hypocratic oath to not discuss their patients' health under punishment of their license to perform medical assistance revoked.

PS: Be sure you are not a hypochondriac, no offense intended.

why dont they listen to you? i say that you need to sit down with them and say, hey, i have been sent to the ER for my breathing, i am having episodes, and i have alot of trouble breathing in our house and outside. its not just our home its everywhere, and i think i have asthma. its not just i think i do, i really do and i just want you to take me to a doctor to get it checked out. if i dont, then im sorry i wasted your time, and i guess theres just something else wrong with me. but if i do, please can we just deal with it and hopefully make it less painful for me.

i have asthma too, just i had it as a kid and its pretty much gone now

good luck

It sounds like you have a stubborn (and not very bright!) 'family'. The people at your school have seen these things. Get them to help. Also see if you can get support from the people at the hospital.

Good luck!

Do you have a family doctor?....Go to him and tell him what your situation is...you are right...it is possible to die from an asthma attack....I know myself how scary it is....
