Recently moved to Oregon and noticed this sign a lot on highway 26 on route to the coast. Never seen it before and not sure what it means...

The previous answerer was incorrect (they were thinkinf of steep grade). Sunken grade means that the shoulder of the road drops off so there is no safe shoulder to pull off onto. It also applies when you have a section of a roadway that has dropped significantly due to a sinkhole or other earth movement. For a truck with a heavy load, any such drop could cause their load to shift.

If you drove HW 26, you know there aren't many places where the road is especially steep, but there are a lot of places where the road is narrow and there isn't a shoulder. A lof of the roads on the coast are this way.

According the Oregon Department of Transportation: "A sunken grade occurs when the earth moves slowly under the road and creates a depression in the roadway."

I think some of those stretches had sunken grades that were fixed, since I didn t notice anything significant. Time to update the signs?

Just tell her the meaning from the dictionary: intrepid boldness, synonym: temerity Wait, then you'd just have to explain what that means. Try this definition: bold or arrogant disregard of normal restraints. See, your EF knows the meaning already. She just didn't have a word for it. It isn't a bad sign. She's trying to improve herself. Here is a quote using the word, audacity I think she can relate to: "Perseverance and audacity generally win!" Madame Dorothee Deluzy Haha, enjoy your book!

it means the road has a low grade so the truckers have to use a higher gear!
