It was dark with no road lighting on a 70mph road in Scotland and the police were standing outside their car pointing a hand held device at me. I think I may have been travelling at about 90ish ( I know it's stupid, shame on me!) but they didn't pull me over or chase me or anything. I thought these devices just registered your speed but couldn't take your registration number. I thought the police had to then pull you over to give you a ticket. I'm thinking, how could they have seen my registration plate with my lights shining at them and at the speed I was doing? Does this device take my registration? I know the mobile camera vans can get your registration number as these have more equipment in them, hence the need for a van. This was only a hand held device though. Does anyone know if these devices are capable of this and if I should expect a letter in the post from the police? (No lectures about me speeding please) Thanks

Here in the U.S. we do not have any hand held devices for photo RADAR (mail) citations that I know of.

If it was a handheld device it was probably just a conventional RADAR or LIDAR. Maybe you didn't get stopped because the officer had interference and did not capture your speed, the officer was waiting for a faster car, he had to use the bathroom, or it was too cold to mess with writing a ticket. Just some thoughts.

I read in motorcycle news that the hand held guns should no longer be used as they proved they could get a reading of 30mph whist pointing the gun at the ground with just a shake of the hand. They are not reliable. All cameras used in my area are fixed and mobile ones are on tripods or fixed in vans. We even have a member of the public with a silver 4x4 getting in the act now and regularly tries to catch people coming home at night and going to do their food shopping at asda. We even get the police hiding behind trees and farm gates on our open roads. If you get a ticket, get in touch with motorcycle news and find out what they know. They are not anti-speeding but are anti camera. Think they call them GREED camares. We have one that sits in a 40 zone dual carriageway about 100 yards BEFORE the limit becomes a 70 limit. Maybe we should all take our front number plates off and put them on our dashboards. The police have limited numbers now and just don't have the time or manpower to stop and prosecute everyone. How about a revolution as its just getting more and more crazy living here. I just wonder how they going to earn extra income when we all conform. Good luck

No - the old 'hair drier' units only register your speed.

They would have visually seen your reg plate.

However, there is a newer device (don't know if Northern Constabulary have it or not, Strathclyde do) which captures both speed and reg number.

If it was a 70mph road - A9 ?
Most of the Scottish roads are only 60mph (except Motorways or Dual carriageways).

They put rear licence plates on cars with lights for just such occasions. Expect a letter within 14 days.

i also know that there is evidence, that has been provided in courts, which says that the hand held radars are not accurate even when calibrated regularly. apparently they can add 13 miles per hour on.............a policeman friend of mine says anyone should always ask to go to court when fined with a hand held and to demand the recent calibration certificate. regards your question, i think they have to pull you over to issue the fine with hand held devices!
