I think its very important to take ALL dogs to atleast 1 round of Obedience . It gives you a chance to bond with the dog , plus you learn how to work with them .

If people would spend *one* year working with their dog and taking it to classes, they would have a much better pet for the rest of that dogs life.

Unfortunately, some people are lazy and think one class is good enough. Even worse are the ones who do NO training until the dog is 3-4 and totally out of control, maybe biting/growling, and THEN decide to do something about it.

I absolutely think having a dog is therapeutic. I have two dogs, one is a 4 year old black lab and the other is a 13 year old rottweiler/beagle mix. I also have a cat that I love to death that is only about a year old. I've suffered anxiety and depression for a long time, and I've been to therapy and I've been put on several different kinds of medication for it. There's something about animals and the way that they love you unconditionally that is just SO comforting and I truly consider my dogs and my cat as members of my family. I recently moved out of state because I transferred to a new college and moved into an apartment with an ex boyfriend (we were together when we signed the lease and later we broke up but we're still living together.) When I moved I was very home sick and depressed about my 4 year relationship ending and I felt extremely lonely, i had to leave my dogs at home because they were both too big to live in the apartment complex that I am living in. So I went to pet smart and adopted my cat. I feel like she honestly saved my life because there were times where I felt like I didn't have anything to live for. Not that my life is bad, I just felt really depressed. I treat my cat like she's my baby. I don't know what it is about having animals that just makes life feel brighter.

I was a first-time dog owner when I adopted a four month old Lab/Boxer from my local shelter. Not only was it mandatory to take a class when you adopted, but I was eager to! We have taken more than just obedience classes, others including training and socialization classes.

My dog is now over a year old and we have taken two classes at the shelter, she has a private trainer and I have taken a few training classes at the Wild Animal Park! It has been a HUGE help in learning about my dog and to both of us adjusting to life together.

My puppy is currently enrolled in puppy obedience class. She has finals and graduation next week. The lessons she has learned are invaluable. She has learned not only basic obedience but how to socialize with other dogs and people. How to behave in public. How to walk on a leash. She is much better behaved after 7 weeks of classes. I definitely agree that it is important to enroll all dogs in Obedience Classes. I don't plan to stop with this class I plan to enroll her in more advanced classes.

Yes. All of my show dogs go to conformation classes, which teaches a small amount of basic obedience, and my other dogs have all been to obedience classes for the socialization and training.

i've been handling dogs from the time i was a kid... so i don't take them to classes i do however take them to play dates with other dogs when they where pups and kids and even to our vet to get them use to the scary place. i do however feel that if u have never trained a dog or know much of them that it is very important to go to obedience.. and ppl who get the powerful breed pits... rotties..shepherds... it should be mandatory..we would have fewer problems.. but the little dogs get away with everything cause they are "cute"
and i've always said it's not the biggin u have to watch its them little bastards

Absolutely.
I have been training dogs for over 50 years, and I still take my own to handling / o/b classes. Not because I can't train them, but because of the difference it makes in their social skills.

i train all my own dogs, but still took each of them to obedience class in a multi dog environment, i cant agree with you more, but its mainly about socialization. it gets them out there, used to other dogs and people and can be just great fun

I think it ought to be a requirement-if you own a dog, you take it to class. If you don't have time/ money, you don't need to own a dog.
