One who utilizes the systematic use of violence and intimidation to achieve political objectives, while disguised as a civilian non-combatant. The use of a civilian disguise while on operations exempts the perpetrator from protection under the Geneva Conventions, and consequently if captured they are liable for prosecution as common criminals

"Terrorist" is a word used so often and so loosely that it has lost a clear meaning.

This is a proposal to lend some clarity to the definition, and thus hopefully to the use, of the word "terrorist."

Currently, the term "terrorist" is applied to the use of force most often on the basis of whether the speaker agrees with the goal of the violence. Hence the expression "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."

Alternatively, or sometimes even in conjunction with the foregoing, some people condemn any violence by a non-governmental entity -- whatever the target -- as terrorism, and approvingly label any action by a sovereign country's military forces -- again, whatever the target -- as "military strikes" or the like.

In determining whether an act is "terrorist" or not, it would be more useful to eliminate subjective evaluations of the goals of the violence, and instead, utilize two other factors -- the expected result of the violence, and the nature of the actor -- to then distinguish among four different types of acts involving the application of force:

Expected result of the violence: Let's define a "terrorist" action as the use of violence where one would reasonably expect harm to innocent civilians. This is to be distinguished from a "military" action, where the use of violence is not reasonably expected to harm innocent civilians.

Nooo, a terrorist is a person who is not thinking right. A normal person would not ever think of killing many innocent people with an AK-47 or a bomb. Terrorists are people who are messed up in the head, they think it's fun to kill people for no reason. They really put the justice on Saddam, and they should do the same to Bin Laden as soon as they find him. All terrorists should just drop dead now, save us the big hassle of bombs and AK-47's. I mean, really, what's the use of killing people for no reason? No normal person can see why it's so fun, because terrorists think different than us. They've been taken in by an evil force, they think about deaths and nothing else. Hell, I'd settle for one of their plans to backfire on them. They blow up a bridge, and a big chunk of concrete crushes them. Bye- bye Paki! Even so, there are also good Pakis that aren't terrorists. Just the Pakis who are messed up in the head, they become terrorists. Anyone can become a terrorist, what's holding us back is our love of the world and the many good people living in it. It'd be a miracle if every sinner and terrorist just dropped dead, but we'd have millions of bodies to bury, you know?

my idea of what terrorist is . the person or persons has involved himself in an action that is designed to cause fear in the civilian population that a further action by the person will again be directed not against a military but instead against civilians.
i think this is a broad description of a terrorist that i think is sensible because i am totally sure that gangs in our own countries are just as much terrorists as any group from another country .
think of it . at night in a big city walking along with your spouse but other wise alone nice weather all of that. are you going to be more worried that bin landen will drop a plane on you or that a gang or gang member will come out of the dark and harm you.
i think the gangs have more people afraid then any people who are out to get us but don't live in this country.
the gangs benefit from there fear tactics more then anyone else it is the fear of the gangs that keeps good people from just calling the cops whenever they see one of them committing a crime
i say put the military on the streets here at home and have them support the police who will be in turn supported by new laws and the entire justice system.

It is not easy to define. Different terms are used to define the same act and the fact is, the big powers have linked this act with Islam. So, the image of a terrorist is a Muslim and with this mindset, it is impossible to identify a real terrorist. Any act of violence against innocent civilians is terrorism. But who did it?

While terrorist & terrorism have come to acquire a specific meaning in todays world, I think each right-thinking, honest & brave person in India should become a terrorist. Lets analyse what 'terrorist' means. According to Merriam-Webster, Terrorist means - One that inspires fear . Now this statement would be a perfect description of a policeman in the eyes of a thief; or a judge in the eyes of a criminal or a father for that matter, in the eyes of an erring child. Just as the mere presence of a policeman creates terror in the heart of a criminal, we should strive to imbibe qualities that create terror in the hearts of criminals and every one of us should become a terrorist for the criminals, thieves, rapists, murderers, dacoits etc. This simple solution will ensure that just as a thief runs away on spotting a policeman, all criminals will run away on seeing so many honest, brave & awe-inspiring Indians!!

Shortest defination of a terrorist is the one who spreads SCARE and intimidates, there are many types of Terrorism i.e State Terrorism, Religious Terrorism, Fanatic Terrorism and Criminal Terrorism etc.The other side of the picture is that the same act seen as terrorism by one side is seen as heroism by the perparators therefore its really difficult to describe the act but in short anything which harms the innocent is Terrorism.

a terrorist is not a man who has to be killed or he is not born a terrorist but certain circumstances force him to be a terrorist. A person who has no employement and no source of income , sees his family crying with hunger.this is the time when he is dragged to do wrong deeds.he has to do something to feed his family, may be its a good or bad work. the defination of a terrorist is not a devil who has come from hell. but its a man who has come from heaven but dragged to hell by the circumstance

the only solution to this is educating people's mind in opposition of terrorism . they should all be employed ......

The definition of terrorists have been somewhat of a problem for the experts. There are a number of definitions for terrorists. There is a reason for this...there is a quote "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". This is true because it depends on which side of the fence you are on. So the definitions that you will get today may all be correct in one aspect or another, as I said depending on which side of the fence you are on. A Terrorists can be someone using force to impose their own ideologies on the majority or he can be a freedom fighter and a hero to others. It's a long drawn out debate.

The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself!!

Looks like all we do in our country now is fear tactics and fear programs.

I think the terrorists have won!!

I think americans need to be asking why we continue to scare ourselves and treat other people in the world worse than we expect to be treated.

In example: Why did we fire all the Iraq's working in key jobs in Iraq, now they do without electricity 12 or 18 hours a day, no sewage, bad water or none, no work, no money, you name it , its bad there .

Time for america to stand up and stop this war, and let Iraq and Iraq's fix it, not American companies like Bechtel robbing billions daily from them and the USA by not doing the work they dont know how to do anyway.
