Personally, I always feel it's important. If one gets sloppy with friends to whom it doesn't matter--it can spill over to your writing where it could be absolutely essential that you "come across" as an educated person. As for the spell check here, it doesn't always work. For example, if you typed "then" when you meant "them" it will accept that as being a WORD correctly spelled. It does virtually nothing as to grammar. Also, "rushing" an email can be easily misinterpreted & people may feel you just didn't want to spend the time to communicate with them. At times, I think that if I see "lol" one more time here, I'm going to flush myself down the loo! Just an added note--Yahoo has snatched away my avatar, nickname & 360 page. NO ONE can/will help, but makes me feel sort of "invisible" after a year on this site! Yes, I think it's important for many reasons.

If this is a buisiness type email, then your grammar and spelling portray who you are, what your characyter is like, and what your work ethics are.
If this is an email to a family member, you want the grammar and spelling to be decent, because if it's sloppy, the family member might assume that you rushed through the email, didn't think it out, and don't care enough for them to take the time to send a nice, warm email.
If this is to a friend, it's ok to mess up a little bit as long as they can comprehend it.

Remember that there's always SpellCheck and using bad grammar can make you seem less educated than you really are.

If it's for work, I'd say it's very important. If it's for friends or family, not so much. I have always been naturally good at grammar and spelling, but I wouldn't flip out to find a typo had slipped through.

It depends on who it's to and what it's for. If it's for anything other than personal you must have good spelling and grammar. I happen to be very particular about spelling, it's a hang up of mine. I've blown off a couple of guys because they couldn't spell but not everyone is as uptight as me. I think you just have to look at the person and see how much attention they pay to their own spelling and grammar.

Well for me, it depends on who I am sending it to. For friends-not very important but for businesses, then that would be very important.
