It was never Palestine. That's a name the British slapped on the region during the Crusades

"PALESTINE?"

The term "Palestine" came from the name that the conquering Roman Empire gave the ancient Land of Israel in an attempt to obliterate and de-legitimize the Jewish presence in the Holy Land. The Roman Procurator in charge of the Judean-Israel territories was so angry at the Jews for revolting that he called for his historians and asked them who were the worst enemies of the Jews in their past history. The scribes said, ‘the Philistines." So, the Procurator declared that Land of Israel would from then on be called "Philistia" [further bastardized into "Palaistina"] to dishonor the Jews and obliterate their history. Hence the name "Palestine." One more thing. Very often one hears the revisionists and propagandists finding ancient historical links between the "Philistines" and the Arab "Palestinians." There is no truth to this claim! The Philistines were one of a number of Sea Peoples who reached the eastern Mediterranean region approximately 1250-1100B.C. They were actually an amalgamation of various ethnic groups, primarily of Aegean and south-east European origin [Greece, Crete and Western Turkey] ... but surely not of Arabian origin! These Philistines were not Arab... and neither was Goliath! The Arabs of "Palestine" are just that... Arabs! And these Arabs of "Palestine" have about as much historical roots to the ancient Philistines as Yasser Arafat has to the Eskimos!

If anything, the name "Palestine" was associated with Jews. In the years leading up to the rebirth of Israel in 1948, those who spoke of "Palestinians" were nearly always referring to the region's Jewish residents. In fact, Arab leaders rejected the notion of a unique "Palestinian Arab" identity, insisting that Palestine was merely a part of "Greater Syria."

Palestine is a region (it's in the Bible if you read that sometimes) It is not today a political state, but an ethnic group that resides in the state of Israel. Since modern Israel was only created after WWII, not all Palestinians are happy about this and the Jews and Palestinians have been separated into different parts of the country by a demarcation fence. Many Palestinians want their own political state, which keeps a little conflict going on over there.

Yes. Palestine was the name given to the area bounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the west and the Jordan River on the east. The name derives from Philistine, a group of peoples who lived basically in the area of the present day Gaza strip some 600 years before the Common Era. The Greek Heroditus spoke of a "district of Syria, called Palaistinêi" (whence Latin: Palaestina, whence English: Palestine). in his writings during the 5th Century BCE. In the second century the Romans named Judea and Samaria "Syria Palestinia". During the Byzentine Period, the entire region, including Galillee, was named "Palaestinia". It was called the District of Palestine during the Caliphate, though the name disappeared under the Ottomans. However, the British resurrected it after it took over the region after WWI. So you can see that the name is an ancient one, and was used throughout history.

Of course there is, which is why we read about it in the papers! However, the question is whether the claims of the Arab Palestinians are supported by the facts and whether their demands are fair and reasonable.
