Depends how you define the war. Operation Iraqi Freedom was actually to bring a Regime Change. That has been accomplished and so yes the war is over. This was what the whole "Mission Accomplished" thing was actually a refrence to. People don't seem to understand that. What we are actually doing in Iraq ISN'T an occupation but a nation-building. Oh sure when it is a Republican it is "Occupation" when it was Clinton it was "Nation Building." After all we weren't "occupying" Kosovo, or numerous other places.

Iraq is a 4th generation war. 4th generation wars last long. Iraq will not be over even after many years after the Americans withdraw.
Consider other 4th generation wars like Vietnam. The Communists took decades to drive out the French and later the Americans. Iraq will also take decades to stabilize, although because there are many different warring factions and militias.
It is just that America tries to use 3rd generation tactics to win all of their wars. Even with their overwhelming superiority in firepower, they win these 4th generation regional wars about 50% of the time.

For the people who are saying that the war was over after Saddam was removed from power, and that we're currently in the occupational transition phase, they're just using different words for the same thing. Do you think that whatever happening in Iraq right now is not a WAR?. Stop fooling yourselves. Fighting an insurgency is still a war.
If you put the Vietnam War in the same context, you can also say that it's over from day-one. The Vietcongs are as good as dead. They're no match against the superior American firepower. The following phase was simply dealing with insurgency. Yet, the Vietnam War dragged on for ten years, even resulting in American defeat. So, is it valid for you to say that the Vietnam war was over in one day?.

Was it ever a true war? Did Congress formally declare war (as the Constitution says only Congress can do)?
If a dude blows your legs off via remote control but it's not a realy war, are you still a war hero?

Officially the war has been over a few months after it began so the coalition forces there are sort of occupation forces fighting resistance fighters.

No, its not over. It won't be over until the US has a leader more concerned with what is best for the nation and less concerned with wresting every portion of profit from the present conflict. Let's just hope that happens before the US is totally bankrupt of money and freedom for its own citizens. Whatever happened to the beacon on a hill?

I'm afraid this is only the beginning of The War to end All Wars. Pray that it may be over quickly.

George W. Bush claimed victory months and months ago, yet hundreds of people are still getting killed on both sides. So I'd say that no the war is not over, and don't believe a word that comes out of the mouth of our president.
