I'm getting a puppy soon, she will eat puppy chow, but after that, what is the best dry and canned dog food? And how often do you give a dog canned food? Thanx!

I would say anything that has ______ Meal as the first ingredient. My dog is eating Nutro Max Large Breed Puppy right now. She is doing really good on it. I work at a pet supply store, and one of the best ingredient lists I've seen is on Blue Buffalo dog food.

But as for canned vs dry, you should be giving a mix, or just dry. If you give the dog all canned food, the dogs teeth could decay and stuff. When you get dry food, it helps clean the teeth and stuff. I give my dog canned food (or pouches, she loves the Nutro Natural Choice Pot Roast one) as a snack.

If you are going to give it Puppy Chow you might as well give it rat poison. I have 3 large dogs at 70lbs each, we feed them Timber Wolf Organics. Human grade dog food, and there is another as well called Solid Gold "Hunden Flocken"

Research a book that is called "The truth about pet food" or something lke that, but basically if you look at the back of a typcal bag of dog foods, you will see BHT or BHA or both. The common name for those "preservatives" is Agent Orange.. the chemical the US used in vietnam to reduce foliage in the forests, and also caused several cancers in the soldiers after the scenario was over.

Chicken Byproducts is like the intestineas with poo still in them, and beaks and feet and stuff, basically anything that is not fit for human consumption.

For us it is EXPENSIVE, but it is worth it kinowing that they are getting healty food. Also, with the better foods their breath does not stink, and you can feed them less because the food is better formulated for their nutrition.

The best dog foods are not sold at mass marketed places like PetSmart, and they are not advertised usually. Research both of the names I mentioned above( there are others), and you can get an idea of what good foods there are out there.

P.S. Get "Beefhide" chews versus "Rawhide" ( another fun thing to look up for you.)

That pup will look to you for everything, imagine if you knew you were feeding it something that could cause cancer or early death, would you not want to do for that pup now so it can be with you longer?
P.P.S Do not buy any dog food from walmart, i heard the employees poo in a bag and they sell it as dog food.. ( i am just kidding about the employees pooing in a bag, but it is really bad stuff for dogs)

I feed my 2 year old retirever Chicken Soup for the Adult Dog Lovers Soul - Large Breed Formula. If you can get past the name it is a good quality food. I used their puppy formula until my dog was a year old. I also agree with the person who suggested Natural Balance. I used that for a while while experimenting with adult foods. I do not feed my dog canned food. I do put a little warm water on his kibble though. The breeder said this helps with digestion. Have fun with your pup and good luck.

You never have to give your dog canned food. It really isn't the best thing to give them. As far as best dry, it depends on the needs of your dog. I have greyhounds and they need a high protein dry food as they do not have the fat stores that other dogs do and they burn a lot of energy just standing still. I feed my dogs Old Roy High Performance from Wal*Mart. They do really well with it and it is very reasonably priced. Talk to your vet. You should always take a new pet to the vet to get a complete check-up and all their shots as soon as you get them. Also don't forget to get the appropriate license as well. Have fun!

Everyone has different opinions on this. There are a lot of good foods and a lot of crappy foods. We use Nutro Natural Choice for our adult dogs and Nutro Ultra Puppy for the young ones. We are very satisfied with these foods. The dogs do well on them. Their coats are silkiy shiny, very little shedding and they eat less and make less mess. I like to use Purina Pro Plan canned puppy when I feed the canned, but we usually give this more to our expectant and nursing mothers than to the pups.

I'm not going to say a brand. This is a highly debated subject. I usually like to go with a food that has a meat as the first ingredient. Not a filler like corn or something. Make sure it says chicken, lamb or beef first...not chicken meal or something similar. Once you find a dry food company you are happy with you can more then likely go with their canned food. I just give can every couple of weeks as a special meal.
