In the Swiss-German part of Switzerland people speak Swiss-German as their native language. Swiss-German is based on a older form of German and is quite different from modern formal German. It has its own grammar and vocabulary as well as numerous dialects. There is a dispute among linguists whether Swiss-German is a German dialect or a language.

As Swiss German is only an oral language formal German is used for written communication in the Swiss-German speaking parts of Switzerland. Therefore children learn formal German at school and virtually all Swiss-Germans understand write and speak formal German very well although they often have a strong accent.

In the French and Italian speaking parts of Switzerland people often speak formal German as a foreign language.
