Get a clicker or if you can whistle the same way consistently whistle. Click or whistle or clap your hands, what ever works for you and give the dog a piece of bacon every time you do that and praise the heck out of him. after a few days he will associate that sound with getting a treat, and he will come running when he hears that sound. When he is outside call him make the sound and praise the heck out of him when he comes.

It sounds to me like you need to work on your recall.

What you need to teach a good solid recall is your dog's regular collar and a long line. You can purchase a 30 foot cotton web lead at pet stores for around $15, or you can go to the dollar store and purchase cotton laundry line cheaply.

Attach the long line to your dog's collar, then go outside into the front yard like you would normally, but go out to practice your recall. Holding the long line in one hand, call your dog. If he ignores you, tug on the line and reel him in, then praise him like crazy for coming and reward him using a special reward (something he does not usually get - like a good piece of cheese, a bit of Hot Dog, a special dog treat, etc.).

You have to use a really good reward and be consistent with the training to get a good response - your dog needs to learn that come means come the first time, and that good things happen when he comes.

Repeat the recall exercise several times a day so that it will become consistent. Praise him even more if you don't have to reel him in. Once he consistently comes back to you without your using of the long line, add distractions to the exercise: if you have friends who live close by, ask them to ride their bicycles past when you call him, or walk their dogs by when you call your dogs, etc. Once trained properly, your dog should recall regardless of the distraction.

Good luck!

First of all why aren't you putting a leash on your dog. No dog should be allowed to wander the neighborhood, it's unsafe for the dog and other people. Keep a leash on him or in a fenced yard!!

I would recommend talking to a dog trainer or taking some training classes. I took an 8 or 9 week (once a week) training class at PetSmart with my dog. It was the best thing I did for him (and me). They have classes for all levels of age and obedience.

Get a remote controlled shock collar. Every time he tries to leave the boundaries of your yard, give him a little shock. He will come to associate leaving the yard with getting a shock, which will put a stop to the wandering.

You can buy these types of collars at larger chain pet stores.

Well keep him onlead!!!

It takes YEARS of working with a dog for him to be TRULY reliable off lead!

I HATE it when strange dogs come up to us when we are out walking, you have NO idea if my dogs are friendly!

I carry pepper spray to protect my dogs from dogs that will not back off and I will use it if I have to!

Hi there. Most cities have leash laws. Put him on a leash to avoid future potential headaches and problems. Have a dog gone great year.
