I start and shut down my computer seveal times in the day. I know this cant be good for it.. I should probally just put it in sleep mode, But i live with several other people and am paranoid they will snoop or use it.

if you put a password on your comp when you put it in standby mode you will have to enter th password befor your desktop reloads

I think it's a toss-up. Sometimes I close it down frequently, sometimes I leave it snoozing gently. If I shut it down, I probably save some electricity, but I wear out the mechanical button that does the turning on. I live alone at the moment, so I'm not worried about snoopers, but if there was anything I didn't want others to see, I think I would password-protect it if possible, because I would feel selfish making the computer unavailable. And after all, they can turn on the power themselves. You need passwords if you are living with others anyway, so in your case the variables are different.

I am hoping someone can tell us specifically whether the amount of electricity saved in turning it all the way off is worthwhile.
