That's funny...it's an old tradition that not too many follow anymore, but I remember my mom "saving" stuff for us when we were just kids for "when we got married".
It's funny, cause almost 17 years into marriage I still have so much "stuff" that I've never even touched.
I had aunts from Italy send all kinds of beautiful towels and sheets and hand embroidered linens and blankets, etc. It's all queen sized and we have a king bed...so I guess we'll save it for our kids and hope they use it some day. Bet they're worth a small fortune too.
Oh and also my mom had a sewing machine and "Cook-O-Matic" stainless steel pots and pans bought for us from the time we were kids...funny the sewing machine was outdated by the time I finally used it...LOL The pot set however lasts a life time and mom's had hers for over 60 years and mines as good as new after almost 17. You can put just about anything away but whether you'll ever come to use it all who knows!
LOL TG we weren't from the era of "dowries".

things you will need after you get married..If you have china or silverware or something you just want to by now and not wait for a bridal shower than you can start a hope chest and get started on your stuff now.

I have the outfits my kids came home from the hospital in, a baby blanket for each of them with their names and birthdates. I have my wedding dress in it. All my highschool yearbooks. A plate that my grandparents got for me from the year I was born. A toy from when I was a child. And other odds and ends that have sentimental value.

My mom put dishes and linens and stuff in mine. That way when I moved out or got married, whatever, I would have my own things.
