Christians should LEAD their societies.
Until the church fell asleep in the 1950's and 1960's, this actually happened in America. Newspapers listed church activities on the front page news, murder and crime were low - no need to make it big news. Now it happens so much we are desensitized to all evil, in the papers, news and television.
Look in the music industry now, Christians follow the acts of secular ways. They copycat their hair, jewelry, music style, clothes, you name it. The Christians are now compromising with worldly ways, trying to justify their reasoning as acceptable.
It doesn't work that way.

All of us no matter what we believe influence society. Christians will influence certain things because of their beliefs for example, anti abortion. We think it is killing a baby and that there are other choices a woman can make without this act. Not all Christians run to abortion clinics with posters and yell at woman getting the abortion, some of us just help her after the fact. But we don't all leave Church with orders to go conquer the world. Christ commanded us to take the gospel to the world. That is what our main concern is, that folks hear the good news, and that is all we have to do. We don't have to beat you on the head to accept it, just to let you know about it.

Yes, all Christians are called to influence their societies; to align them to gospel values. Christians and Christianity should be the light of the world by being good models of what they preach. Jesus said, "Let your light so shine that others may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
Have a blessed day

We are to be IN the world but not OF it...God asks us to spread the good news of the gospel so in talking about what He has done for us, it may just influence others in society around us to want to learn more about Him.
By our actions, we should be influencing society around us that we are different to them..that our way of life is something others may desire to be a part of.

Christians are told to be the salt and light of the earth.Salt is used to prevent decay and rotten things from becoming more rotten.Light is used to turn people from darkness.
So Christians are to be a good example in the world, and try to influence if for the better.

For a true Christian the answer is neither. Jesus said his followers are "no part of this world" In fact at 1 John 2:15-17 we are told the world is passing away and so is it's desire but he that does the will of God remains forever. So we sould not be interested in shaping a society that is passing away but rather searching for what the will of God is.

Take Jesus' own words.
Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority is given to Me in Heaven and in earth.
Mat 28:19 Therefore go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all things, whatever I commanded you. And, behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the world. Amen.
Mar 16:15 And He said to them, Go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to all the creation.
Mar 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Mar 16:17 And miraculous signs will follow to those believing these things: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak new tongues;
Mar 16:18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will be well.
Equally important is his new command that the Christians must love one another so that the world will know who they are. The followers of Jesus Christ and will therefore come in to join them.
