My grandmother called this afternoon and asked if she could attend church with me and my husband because the evening service at her church was cancelled. When we picked her up, my husband asked specifically why the pastor had cancelled their service, and she said it was because of the Super Bowl. He said that he didn't want to force people into making a hard decision, and that he didn't expect a high turnout this evening anyway. As church leader, shouldn't he provide services for those who WANT to go?
What are your thoughts on this?

By the way, my church has evening service from 5:30 - 6:30 pm Eastern time ... and its 7:30 now. So I did attend service this evening, thank you very much.

Yes he should. Doing what's right is *supposed* to be a hard decision.

I am not surprised. It is wrong, but look at so many churches these days. Half of them don't even teach the true Word of God. They are to much of the world. It is a shame. But then read Revelations and see what Jesus says about churches... I think that the end times are drawing near. Not as in next month, but 7 or 10 years at the most by the way things are going in the world.

I truly do not think that the Lord will punish anyone for this absence. Organized religion sometimes borders on a sort of panic when certain changes occur in the religious order of things. I know not everyone is into football, but your leader must truly possess an understanding that because we are also human, missing one service is not cause for alarm. This is where vital perspective and common sense get lost. God lives in the heart. It is admirable to attend church regularly. But strict rules about carrying out one's devotion goes to the side of the extreme. Your church leader understands this and so based his decision on the fact that God is a forgiving God. We need not be up in arms about the lack of a service the odd time for whatever reason. The religious should relax and just learn a little flexibility. You still have the option to read your Bible in place of a service.

I agree, that he should provide services for those who want to go. To have human sports interfere with church leadership is wrong. If he elects not to have services because he loves the super bowl, then he has some inner work to do. He could always have someone record the game for him.

If that is the ONLY service of the week, then yes he should have held the service. If not, the congregants should have gone to a different service or made other arrangements like your grandmother. I would think that the majority of regulars at that service are somewhere watching the Super Bowl.

It would have been a better idea to hold an earlier service so people could have made both. If not that, a super bowl party at the church directly after the service could have been in order.

Yes, the service should have been held for those that did want to attend. He made the decision for everyone that they will chose not to attend. Apparently, the pastor wanted to see the super bowl more than he wanted to preach the word! tsk tsk

Yes I agree I think that he should have not cancelled the service. That isn't right because some people still would choose to go to church and worship God.

I think that pastor wanted to catch the super bowl too! He could have recorded it and still had church.

The preacher shouldn't do such thing... He easily gave into Satan's way of letting the people not go to church.. He basically gavi in to temptation as for himself... Because clearly he also wanna see the Super Bowl...

Maybe God is an NFL fan and told the pastor to not have service.
We've all "called in sick" to work or made up some emergency so we could skip work and do the "fun thing." To err is human, no one is perfect.
