With proper care they can live around 15 years.

One big problem with these dogs is they can tend to get overweight so you need to be sure not to overfeed them as an overwieght dog has a higher risk of many disease.

This breed can also have respiratory problems and might wheeze a bit and is also prone to ear and eye problems - not life threatening though.

Also be sure you brush their teeth regulary as they can have problems with bacteria or tarter build up as is common in most small dogs. The problem here is not just bad breath, but the bacteria gets into their system and can damage the other organs.

Shih tzus are small dogs that can live for 10-12 years. They suffer from many allergies because of their shortened muzzles (which I called smoosh faces), the fact that they are close to the floor and also snore to high heaven. My shih tzu died from stealing fish bones out of the garbage at the age of 4. Which doesn't help you at all. But hey google it or grab a book out the pets section at Borders!

I will agree with everyone else. They can live to around 15. My Mum had 2 of them and 1 died of heart complications. Both of them however sufferred badly with eye problems which required surgery. The 1 she had left is in great health but starting to go a little blind which just means that she has to be kept on a lead on her walk now so she doesn't bump into anything. They are great little dogs though.

The smaller the dog, the longer the life. Large breeds don't live as long. No special disease as long as you have regular health checks and keep the dog clean and feed it nutritious and healthy foods. No table scraps....
