Canaries have been kept as pets for several centuries. They are members of the finch family and are known for being excellent singers. Wild canaries are olive green, but through controlled breeding domestic birds come in many colors including white, blue (really more of a gray), red and the traditional yellow. Only the males sing, so be sure, if you want a song bird, to get a male.
Canaries are not social birds, so if you get one, you do not need to get it a mate. In fact, some birds will fight outside of breeding season. The cage should be as large as you can afford to allow the bird some space to fly. Its a good idea to use perches of different widths, as this is good for the birds feet.
Canaries need a varied diet. Start with a good fresh canary seed blend. Add fresh dark greens, such as kale or brocolli. Mixed frozen vegetables are good, as are bits of apple and other fruits. Cooked carrot or sweet potato is healthy. I used to feed a bit of hard boiled egg with the shell for protein, though you need to remove it from the cage after an hour or so. Whole wheat and corn bread are a nice treat. Calcium is important, so put a cuttle bone in the cage. Fresh water daily is vital.
Canaries life cycles are controlled by the length of day. Its a good idea to cover your birds cage at sunset so they are experiencing a natural length of day. Canaries molt, that is lose their feathers, in summer when the days get long, so its important that they not have long periods of light all year. Molt is a natural phenomenom, but it takes a lot of their energy to grow all new feathers. They will stop singing during this period.
