Excellent question.

The british empire did not enslave and steal as some answerers suggest. That is mindless leftist cliche with nothing to support it.

The British empire gave technology, hygeine, medicine, transport, farming, electricity and government to these far off lands.
Unfortunatley for this world,we also taught the arabs how to mine oil.Now a backward people with an evil religion blackmails the rest of the world.
There would be no terrorism, famine, unemployment or tribal warfare in these third world countries if we were still there.

The irony is,(as ricky gervais pointed out)the african colonies cheered out the british in the 60s and were phoning mrs thatcher for economic and humanitarian aid 20 years later!

A classic example of self rule disaster is the incredible speed at which south africa is hurtling back to the third world since white afrikaner rule was dissolved.Western support for Nelson Mandela was very much a leftist gimmick and very short sighted.A lesson how to destroy a prosperous country within a generation. In another 20 years there will be famine there.I hope the loony left are happy.

well first of all maybe it was true from some point of veiw but there are several factors that you do not consider that you did not consider, first of all when the british controlled the world the areas thhat it controlled were generally what we call the thrid world now, and at that time there were very few problems with overpopulation like in africa or in india like there are now, the local princes did not go to war as often nor did they have the ability to have wars that were as constly as they are now, the brits may have made the world safer, and i do agree that while the british were in say africa there was very little infighting between all the ethnic groups, however when the british began to intorduce new technologies and other things into underdeveloped societies the people realized that the british were living much better lives then they ever werre, some were intelligent enought to realise that you should accept british culture and that it is really better but most thought, huh they're better then us, we dodnt like that and they rebelled. this stage was ineveitable and along with other factors such as having the US and USSR become the 2 world powersbegan to cause the decline of british power and they were inevitably forced to give up their position as a world power becuase they were simply unable to dfefend their interests from nmore powerful nations,so there was a stage when what you said would actually appy but it inevitably paved the way to its own downfall.

It's a comforting thought, wishing that the olden days would come back. But the reality of today's world is, the Brits don't have that kind of power any more. and the world is ten times(if not more) as complicated.
I guess you could say that many countries were safer when they were under the control of dictators/communist regime,,,,

I admire many things about the Brits(and the Irish and the Scots and the Welsh)but having a dominating empire is definitely not the answer to our world's problem.

yep, we sure were the best for a couple of hundred years...

but that was then, now the US and Tony Blair are making a mess which the next superpower (China) will have to fix in 40 or 50 years time...

these things go in cycles....

when it was our turn, we did ok, educated the masses, brought them our religion (Anglican Church and Methodism), taught them how to make tea properly with cows milk put in after the tea, showed them how to make gravy, taught them to speak English so they could help us administer our empire...

we had it all (well, all that was left from the Dutch, French, Spanish, Belgian, German, Italian, and Portuguese empires that is!), then Nazi Germany & Japan took it away from us....and after the US made our new Labour (Socialist) Government take a loan of $5 Billion in 1948 to pay for Lend-Lease we couldn't keep any of it...

So now it's the turn of the US of A to be the big guys on the block for a generation or two... good luck guys...

yes it was a safer place, not just for us, but also for the people who were under the Empire flag. there was no rival fighting between local tribes ,No ethnic cleansing like we see in these in African counties like there is today. People had jobs, homes and stability, knowing the British army would sort out any local feuds. Of course they wanted to be free of the Empire, as they were under an invading force, but i wonder how many of them would like to be back under British rule again ?

the brits had more of the world than anyother. and yes it was safer than now.
what we should do to make it safer now is tell the stupid americans and russians to stop selling the third world guns.
then the world will be safer. if you cant get guns and bullets then how can u make wars.

Empires are a bad thing. The automatically mean the nations being ruled have no freedom or control over their own fate and freedom matters!
