The fact that you call them "flying pigs" makes me question if you are an American.
Your statistics are incorrect, survival rate is not 0% for if that were true no man would get into one!
They are used to support, transport our troops in military operations & to transport badly wounded faster than the usual truck transport. Our mission any where in the world is never to pound defenseless civilians, never! Yes, some civilians are wounded & killed but never as a direct target.

Defenseless civilians? How about enemy ground forces with guns shooting at our troops? I am pretty sure we don't go around regularly shooting defenseless civilians with helicopters. I am not saying that no one Innocent has every died by an attack helicopter but it isn't their primary function. I am not military so I am not qualified to say the best uses for them are but I am sure there are some..... but lets just start with bad guys with guns shooting at our men and women in uniform.

No - They are effective weapons against armored vehicles and troops on the ground in buildings and reinforced structures.

As to their survival rate against aircraft - that is why so much emphasis is placed on gaining air superiority at the beginning of an engagement.

Attack helicopters like the HueyCobra were more heavily armed and were given targets deep behind enemy lines, such as command posts and tanks, attacking them with missiles. The new strategy was also to fight at night, using advanced navigation and imaging systems, and hiding down among the trees and hills using "Nap Of the Earth" (NOE) flying. By doing so, the Army could take advantage of superior American technology to compensate for larger numbers of Soviet ground forces. U.S. helicopters were equipped with infrared and night imaging systems, and pilots were given night vision goggles so they could see in the dark. By the 1980s, the United States also fielded heavily armed helicopters dedicated primarily to the mission of destroying tanks and equipped with laser-guided Hellfire missiles.

These changes in tactics proved themselves during the Persian Gulf War, when U.S. attack helicopters could freely range the battlefield during the night, easily destroying Iraqi tanks and other vehicles. Large numbers of U.S. troops were also ferried deep inside Iraqi territory, establishing facilities for supporting the attack helicopters as well as ground troops. Once again, other countries adopted the U.S. tactics and brought their helicopters.

Those "defenseless" civilians, usually claim to the title of "Al-Queda Supporters and Soldiers" are often holding "worthless" RPGs trying to kill Americans. If you were face to face with one of these poor, defenseless, innocent souls, I guarantee you the he would not share your empathy. He might share YOU, however, with his fellow militants (and perhaps his camel) just before you become his next meal.

Except for the Russians, I never heard of any that pounded on defenseless civilians.
(Of course, if I was a terrorist or a Democrat, I might feel differently.)

Imagine being a grunt, pinned down by enemy fire. Then over the hill, or the buildings come your savior---cobra attack helicopters. Instead of your small arms fire, the cobra enters the fight with firepower that overwhelms the enemy and keeps your Marines alive.
