It's my first time going to NY. Not sure on where to stay. Looking for something cheap but safe...its that possible? I need some advice.

Not sure how cheap you are looking for. Usually cheap in New York City means you will be staying in a dump. However, there is one hotel I would recommend. It is the Hotel Pennsylvania across from Madison Square Gardens in Midtown East. It is very reasonable, yet it is in a really great location. Make sure you check out the Penn 500 level rooms, they are business level and are very nice with access to a lounge. I'm not sure how the regular rooms are, but they probably aren't very bad. If you can afford it though, I would try and stay at the Essex House on Central Park South, it is usually pretty reasonable for a luxury hotel on Central Park.

You'll find much better deals if you stay in either Queens or New Jersey and take the train into Manhattan. There are lots of affordable hotels near JFK in Queens, which is only about half an hour on the E-Train to Times Square.

You will be hard pressed to find a hotel in Manhattan for under $200/night.
That being said, everywhere in Manhattan is safe. NYC is so much different than it used to be. Unless you end up in a hotel in Bed-Stuy you'll be fine with whatever you book.

We stayed at the Park Central Hotel on 86th(I think) and 7th and it was close to everything and safe. My daughter 22 walked around the area and travelled shopping by herself and she felt safe. Didn't cost us too much. Ate at local bagel shop for breakfast hotel too expensive.
