Yours is a good question having several plausible answers. If your new-found friend's religion is diametrically opposed to your standard of faith it could then impose problems if both of you allow it.
Many people have formed strong bonds of friendships yet their religions are distinct and different. Having a friend with a different faith can open up doors of enlightenment and understanding, tolerance and good will toward the other.
One example of a difference that may bite both of you is that of two faiths so disjointed and different, such as Christianity with Satanism. Problems may surface because of the belief systems between you.
If you think your religions may be a hindrance, discuss it with your new friend before sending the person on his or her way.

No, I don't get people who think otherwise. What in the hell does religion, have to do with being someones friend? It isn't like you're going to be debating 24/7 just because your friends with an Atheist and you believe in God. Religion does not make the person.

No. People should be willing to accept others even if they are different religions. If someone of a certain religion cannot become your friend simply because they do not share the same beliefs, you are extremely closed minded and racist.

if your friendship is conditioned on religion one might wonder what other strings are attached and what other rules must be followed
in order to have the grand privilege of being admitted into your illustrious circle of friends.

Its good to know, especially if they are going to use it agianst you later on, but a trustworthy friend would not care what religion you are, and neither would they attempt to convert you.

Unless you're planning on going to church services or converting them to your beliefs, no. Who they are as a person is more important. If you like who they are as a person, what does it matter?
