this guy told me that he liked me and has asked me out on a date (this coming week). His best friend told me that even though he really likes me, i still have to play hard to get. is it true?

Not necessarily. Playing hard to get is a turn off to some people...especially when they're mature and can see through it. Mature adults don't usually like to waste their time with games. Having a life and not being desperate is one thing, but just playing "hard to get" is another thing entirely that seems very juvenile in my opinion.

This is the theory that 'you only value those things that you have to struggle to get'. If he's after sex, he'll go for someone easier to catch. This could be a disappointment, but you'll have to learn to put up with some disappointment in life. If he's looking for a dream partner, you might never qualify, even after 20 years of marriage. In other words, there is no hard and fast rule here. How much do you want to be with him? Every relationship is an investment in the future. Is he worth investing in? Do a cost/benefit analysis and see what you come up with.

I dont understand the whole hard to get business. If you like someone and want to get to know them, then go out for crying out loud.
Its a childish game this hard to get stuff. Just tell him you are interested and if he feels the same, then go for it. I dont suggest being easy on the first date or anything, totally not what i am saying. But its a date, thats all. Whats so hard to get about that?
Good luck,.
