First, since only Catholicism, Anglicanism and Orthodoxism currently canonize saints, you will have to join one of these churches. Anglicanism doesn't usually canonize saints, but they did canonize King Charles I. The Orthodox Church is also less likely to canonize nowadays. Your best bet is Catholicism, so if you're serious about becoming a saint, join right away.
The next step is to become an ultra-pious person. Pray every day, meditate, go to Church, avoid all the major sins and start helping random people with good deeds. Spend most of your time devoted to religion, and become totally celibate. You will know you are succeeding when you start to have visions or encounter other religious paranormal phenomena.
The final step is to produce miracles, either while alive or after you die.
Oh, and you must die before you can become canonized.
BTW, saint just means holy and in the early Church it was used to refer to all Christians. To be a true saint, just overcome your ego and try to live a good life. That is enough.

anyone who accepts what Jesus Christ did on the cross for them and becomes washed of their sins, according to the Bible, is a Saint! and has the promise of eternal life in Heaven.
Oh, and don't believe all that catholic mumbo jumbo, believe The Bible. Accept Christ today and you will be a saint. This nonsense about being some kind of an amazing goodie two shoes is their opinion only! NONE are righteous, no not one Romans 3:10 all have gone astray! get it ALL have gone astray ALL! Trusting Jesus will make you a saint.
If you want to become a saint, ask someone who is a saint, I am a saint!!!!! Not because I am some great and amazing person, but because I am a sinner who accepted God's wonderful gift to me, Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.

This is Dummy's Answer to Becoming a Saint: convert a lot of people in "third world' countries and force them to give a tithe to the Church. I am a Catholic, and I know this. Look at Mother Theresa, who is close to becoming a saint. She did that very thing.

I would say lead an exemplary life everyday to yourself and others.
Go to Holy Church daily, receive Holy Communion, Fast on Fridays. Go to confession 3X a month. Do the LEAST favorite tasks meaning hard work or drudgery tasks.
Great sources to read up on are: St. John Vianney, St. Martin De Porres, St. Leopold Mandic. All are on Catholic Forum, or just type in their names, and see their bios.

first, you have to be a Catholic, since they are the only Christian group that creates, or makes a fuss of saints.
Then you have to have done something miraculous....but don't worry, their standards are pretty low as to what they call a miracle, and how they "prove" it was miraculous.\
then you have to die. Sorry, but that's part of the deal. You can't be either a saint or a martyr unless you are dead. So no fringe benefits of saintdom in this life.
And of course since there isn't a "next" life...no benefits at all really.

One doesn't become a saint on one's own, one is made a saint by God, through his mercy, grace, and love.
Obviously to help us be disposed to receive God's love and mercy, we must reject sin, believe in God, and live in virtue (as a response to the free gift of salvation, not in order to obtain it). We are recommended prayer, almsgiving and fasting as means of giving ourselves more completely to God in order to do His will.
May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it. 1 Thes 5:23-24
In response to my unlearned protestant colleague (that is unlearned in regard to what the Catholic Church actually professes), the Catholic idea of a saint is not necessarily different for the protestant. The saints are all those who are saved by Jesus. When the Catholic Church declares someone "a saint," it is saying that it is certain that this person is in heaven and has lived a life worthy of being emulated. The term is actually "canonization," which means that their life and deeds are added to the list of those we believe for certain to be in heaven with Jesus. The requirement of the miracle is to add creedance to the testimony that this person is in heaven and praying to Jesus for fellow members of the Church. The process of investigation that the miracle undergoes is very rigorous and looks explain the miracle in any other way before saying it is due to the intercession of the saint with Jesus. By the way, the Catholic Church also celebrates a feast day remembering the non-canonized saints too... November 1st... it is called All Saints Day.

The protestant answer: every Christian is a saint. If you honestly believe, you're at Paul's level.
If you're a Catholic: be a good person all of your life. Donate your life to the church. Do noble deeds. Make it look like you performed a miracle. After your life is over, you can be voted saint.

Realize who you really are...and your relation with God. Once you are freed...then go out and liberate others.
Saints liberate others. You can only do this if you are liberated first.
