Hi George... drooling can be indicative of several factors such as accidental ingestion of toxins. Consider ringing a veterinarian to discuss if your cat should come in to be evaluated as this could be quite SERIOUSLY life-threatening.

More on causes of drooling: http://www.manhattancats.com/Articles/drooling.html

Damage or paralysis of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V) can lead to drooling secondary to an inability to close the mouth. Lesions involving other cranial nerves (cranial nerve VII, IX, X, and XII) can also lead to drooling. Fortunately, cranial nerve disorders are uncommon in cats.

Kidney failure is a very common condition, especially in geriatric cats. Cats with severe kidney failure may have significant uremia (literally “urine in the blood”). Uremic cats often develop ulcers on the gums, tongue, and edges of the lips. These ulcers are painful, and many of these cats drool foul-smelling saliva as a result. These ulcers are readily visible on oral examination.

Various drugs and toxins can cause hypersalivation in cats.

Cats with serious gum disease or an infected tooth can start drooling. It is best that you take the cat to a vet very soon to see if that is the cause. An infected tooth will become very painful for the cat and can cause it to stop eating - that is very serious. Plus you do not want the infection to invade the cat's blood stream and do more serious overall damage to the cat.

We have a cat that drools and took him to the vet. The vet said the cat's immune system is unable to control a common bacteria in cats mouths. He prescribed a medication and since, the cats condition is improved but he still has a problem and will require the medicine for the rest of his life. the medicine is inexpensive.

I do not know what the bacteria is or the name of the medicine since it's being handled by another family member.

Your cat needs to go to the vet.

Like recent as hours or days, months. My cat always gets me nuts when he eats something he should not have and has a difficult time getting back up. Hair balls sometime get stuck. It usually takes 4 to 8 hours to stop. If this is what going on call the vet they will advise you.

My cat started drooling and one vet told me it was allergies. The next day she was seriously sick sneezing blood and shaking her head like crazy. I took her to a different vet and it ended up to being bad respiratory infection and it cost me a lot in vet bills. You should take your cat to be checked because it could turn into something worse.

it is definately the bad teeth, my cat had bad teeth and infected gums. she didnt close her mouth all the way because it hurt and so drool came out. have you ever woke up to a wet pillow cause you didn't have your mouth closed..same thing. they will give clindimyacin for infection and may have options for removal that dont involve being put under. an infection will kill if left untreated.

odds are if his teeth are really bad thats the problem and it is only going to get worse. there are different kinds of anesthetics that can be used and i will guaruntee that he is not allergic to them all. i have actually never heard of an animal being allergic to anesthetics but some are more sensitive to certian ones than others. take him to the vet and discuss your options. oh yeah even if it isn't the teeth he could have a foriegn body in his gums, or something stuck in his mouth, either way go to your vet!!
