you can´t learn it inside 4 years.
some claims it is actually a very polite language, if they speak a high well educated mandarin.

I am a Cantonese speaking Chinese person and I find the Mandarin language exceptionally hard to grasp.

Yes it is in fact they have some words that depending in the tone you use and the pronuciation it means several different things. I worked in a group home and one of the boys in there speaks it very fluently as his grandma still lives over seas.
