As of bearshare 6, it's all legal and you have to register. Bearshare 6 is not nice at all as you will only be able to access content that is for sale. What i am trying to say is that its mostly commercial now.

If you can track down version 5 of bearshare (ask your friends), you can use it without registering and you can still do all the naughty stuff because it still functions as as a gnutella client. Otherwise your best bet is limewire or emule.
