As long as he is teething he will chew! Sometimes doingthe chewing way beyond teething.
Having your pets spayed or neutered can do several good things ....calm them down....prevent unwanted pets from being born....and extending the life ...
I have included 2 links and a couple of excerpts from those links.

Be informed of the benefits of neutering or spaying
Your pet needs you to be

What can you do to stop the suffering?
Spay and neuter your pet! In addition to saving lives, spaying and neutering can also drastically improve your pet's health and life expectancy. The idea that pets become fat or lazy when they are spayed or neutered is a myth. Sterilized pets lead healthier, longer lives. Spaying a female eliminates the possibility of uterine and ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer. Neutering a male reduces the risk of both prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. Neutering also will make your pet more affectionate and less likely to roam, get in fights, or become lost.

Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.
Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.
Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

Good Luck

There are many good reasons to have a dog neutered but chewing isn't one of them. It will reduce aggression though and has many health benefits. As for the chewing? Well you have chosen one of the hardest to train breeds, one of the most bull headed, stubborn breeds. Also, if handled right, one of the most loving and affectionate. Okay, back to the chewing. You have to try (TRY) to train this dog as to what is acceptable to chew and what is not. Get him 2 or 3 really durable chew toys. (a pit can destroy a kong)( I know, i have an amstaff) Only 2 or 3. Too many chew toys and it looks to the dog as if EVERYTHING is his to chew. When the dog picks up his chew, praise him....a lot! Throw a praise party. When he picks up something he shouldn't, tell him "NO" firmly, make him give it up and give him his chew. You will have to be very diligent with him or you will be going to the emergency vet a lot because he ate something harmful. (again, amstaff) When your not home, crate him, with no toys. You don't want him tearing up a toy and eating it while you're gone. Could be a real big problem. Seriously with a bully breed most of the training will be YOU getting trained to keep a very close eye on him. Mine is 9 years old and though he's not as bad as he was when younger we still keep a close eye on him. But he did learn to chew his toys.....mostly. Do things with him. Take him for long walks (when it's not so freaking cold). Teach him some tricks. Do obedience training with him. Especially teach him "drop it" or "release" The busier you keep him the less he will chew.

Neutering is not going to change your dog's behavior.

A lot of the time, people recommend neutering as a "fix" for problem behaviors and claim that neutering is going to make a dog more laid back, less likely to break out of the yard, and all sorts of other things. As your dog is already sexually mature, neutering is most likely not going to change your dog's personality at all.

What you have with the chewing is a behavior problem, not something that can be fixed by having him neutered.

Of course you should still get him neutered, because there's very little point in keeping an unaltered dog unless you are a responsible breeder who is going to title this dog in conformation and breed him when he is old enough (and has proven himself as a good representative of the breed).

But you need to address the behavioral problem. A lot of the time when dogs are destructive, there are a number of reasons for the behavior. For many dogs, it's either a lack of routine and leadership in their home, or a lack of exercise.

Pit Bulls are a powerful breed who are very tough and have a lot of endurance - as a result, they require a good amount of exercise, both physical and mental, each day. You may want to try upping your exercise to at least two 45 minute brisk walks each day, along with basic mental exercise (ie, simple obedience training - sit, down, stay, heel, etc.).

You may also want to evaluate what's going on in your home in terms of having a routine and your position as the dog's "pack" leader - dogs require structure and leadership. Dogs that are stubborn or will challenge for leadership require more consistency than dogs who are naturally submissive and easy going. Do you know what type your dog is? For some basic leadership help, try NILIF (nothing in life is free) training, as it helps you do the groundwork that is needed for a good relationship with your dog.

Lastly, when you cannot supervise your dog - crate him. Crating is about providing your dog with a safe place to be when you can't watch him - a dog that chews on everything is not just a nuisance, but can actually kill himself. Dogs die from swallowing things that may cause an obstruction in their bowels, or they can electrocute themselves eating through power cords and cables!

I'm sorry to tell you this, but neutering a pet doesn't stop him from chewing. But neutering is a good idea for MANY other reasons. I think the most important reason is to prevent any more accidental puppies. It can also prevent him from roaming too much to find a female in heat. And it does sometimes help them calm down a little, but a 1 year old pit bull is still going to be a pretty energetic dog. Neutering also prevents certain health problems, such as testicular cancer, and also lowers the chance of prostate problems. So i do think your dog should get neutered.

For behavioral problems, i think you should think about going to some obedience classes with him. This will help you teach him some basic manners, and also how to walk nicely on a leash. For his energy, i think you should walk him more, maybe twice daily, plus some play in the back yard. To help with chewing, provide him with PLENTY of chew toys. Kongs are really great, they are hard for a dog to destroy, and you can fill them with dog treats, some pieces of their food, cheese, peanut butter, and the dog can go at it for hours. But you have to re train him to chew ONLY on the things that you allow. If you find him chewing on an inappropriate object, tell him No! Remove it from his mouth, and replace it with one of his chew toys. Praise him when he chews on this toy. He should eventually start chosing his toys over things like rocks and boxes, and when he does chose his toy, praise him for making the right choice. I hope this helps. And i think an obedience trainer would also be helpful. Good Luck with your dog, i hope you don't have to get rid of him!!

While it may calm him down. It may or may not help with his chewing everything. Get him some toys and everytime you catch him chewing something he shouldn't tell him no and give him one of his toys to chew. Eventually he will learn that you are telling him to only "eat" his stuff and leave yours alone. Also some obedience training and regular excercise would be helpful. He sounds like he is bored.

well neutering the dog will calm him down some.hell be less playful and maybe a little depressed for a while.as far as the chewing goes-its totally normal and there isnt much you can do.try buying him chew toys of his own or even chewy food that might keep him from biting on everything else.good luck

Check with your vet. And contact a Pit Bull breeder. Try the AKC web site http://www.akc.org/ He's going to ruin his teeth.
If it works let me know. Some of the guys I work with chew and it's just gross. Maybe if I could get them "fixed"...

usually it does calm them, but the chewing issue, i think, is a behavioral problem - though they chew out of frustration - give him stuff he's allowed to chew
it is always worthwhile to get him fixed though health wise - might just do the trick - - good luck
