Your biggest outlay was for the camera not the memory card. I would not lesson the quality of my shots by decreasing the setting to 3 MP. A 2 GB card will give you well over 500 shots at a 7 MP setting.I too am experimenting with my 6 MP camera decreasing setting to 3 MP. If I see no differene in an 8X10 enlargement then I will use the 3 MP setting, but only in a pinch.

Look, you bought a 7mp camera for a reason! If 3mp is the max you need or want, you could have purchased a 3mp camera!
Here is what I have discovered ... even if you don't think you will ever have a need for a larger size ... something may come up, and if you took a lower quality all the time, you are SOL.
Go in between the two for a compromise, if you must. If you even have just one picture you end up using larger, or a cropped section of, it will be worth it.
I used a lesser size to save space for a time ... I "accidentally" got a fantastic, and very unique photo that won a photo contest ... and I could have sold it if it had been higher resolution, but as it was, it couldn't be used. Granted, it was a few years ago and the resolution was about 1.2 mp .. still ... just the voice of experience .. you never know what you want to do in the future!!

Last year, I upgraded to a 6.1 megapixel, after starting out with a 3 megapixel. For standard 4x6 prints, there's no real difference. But if you want to enlarge bigger, beware. Memory cards are cheaper all the time. Consider getting a 1gb memory card and shoot the largest file size possible. My camera is set for medium JPG, and the file sizes average 1.5 megabytes. I can easily fit 450 images on my 1gb memory card before needing to upload.

Very simply, yes it will, but it depends on the size. 3mp at a less than A4 size will show little difference to a 7mp. If you print larger, the difference will be acute.

this is like owning a ferrari and deciding to remove 3 cylinders... coz you didnt think you were going to use them...
the bigger the image size, the better any reproduction will be. at 3 meg itll look great on your mobile phone..but not so good on a decent 22 inch monitor.. i know.
the only gain from dropping a few magnitudes of resolution is to save space.. its a foolish economy.. buy a bigger card.. i just got 2 gigs of CF for 15 quid off ebay... i have an 8 meg olympus e500

As has been said, you never know when you will need that extra resolution. And with the price of storage coming down all the time, you might be glad you have the available resolution.
Use your investment to it's fullest ability! One day, you will be glad you did!
