well, it is sad, because I can really relate to you...my boss used to complain all the time, because in the shop where I worked, the music would drown out his boring conversations...it is really too bad, and maybe you could talk to him, and tell him that it doesn't hurt your work production, and that you would not abuse the right to use it..but remember, he IS paying you, and what he says goes..maybe if you let him know, and then assure him, that if it can't be done, no problem, you just wanted to let him know that it helps you personally work better, Good luck, I feel for you.

Protest usually creates distance. But it's worth an honest try. There is one thing you can do to cope with your depression which will really help you: walking. Walking makes everything work better. Even your moods are connected to walking. If your boss turns a deaf ear to your situation, you may wish to begin looking for a better, more compassionate working environment, but in the meantime, begin to walk about twenty minutes every other day, and I guarantee your moods or "depression" will very soon begin to take a back seat, finally. Exercise will soon make you into a person who is physically strong enough to decide exactly how he feels, all of the time.

It kind of depends on what your job is, but if I were you, I probably would not talk to the boss about it. I understand that music can help lift your spirits, but listening to an iPod at work isn't very professional. Maybe you should consider counseling to learn other coping strategies. Just because the music may make you feel better on a short-term basis, it is not going to help you in the long run.
Good luck!

i guess it all depends on how much u like your job, and how understanding your boss is. if u really don't like your job anyway, and can't talk to your boss, get yourself out of there before u start feeling really ill ! believe me, i speak from personal experience. i ended up having a nervous breakdown caused by stress at work, and it took me 5 years to get back to anything like normality. i fully understand what u mean about the music - it's seen me through some dark times too, but u really do need to sort out the cause of all these feelings of depression and stress. have u considered taking a natural anti depressant called Saint John's Wort ? u can buy it from most health food shops, and lots of chemists. it can be very helpful if u have minor / moderate problems with depression, although u have to be careful with taking other medication at the same time. it can interfere with how some other tablets work. if u think that your mood is becoming more dark, then please see a doctor. ask the receptionist to recommend a doctor to u who is good at dealing with cases of anxiety / depression. good luck.... hope things improve for u.

Well if there isn't any piped in music then maybe he will let you have a small radio at your desk. Or even a radio that others can hear as well. I dont see why not. If the only reason was that you wouldn't hear things then this would be a compromise. He's obviously not doing it to make you miserable. He's just looking out for your well being. I wouldn't say anything about the ipod but I would ask about a radio. good luck.

I don't think that you should tell your boss. Why are you depressed and feel down? you might need to address the situation that is making you feel unhappy and sad, if you cannot do anything about it for now, at least you can work towards solving the issues and hopefully feel alot happier within yourself and your life. Only you can make those changes. Good luck.

As a manager, I always like to know when something is going on that affects performance. If one of my staff came to me with this problem, I would do my best to help them.
If I were you, would speak to the Human Resources department (at first, anonymously if you feel the need) to get their view. Many people don't seem to realise that the HR department is there to advise on employee welfare as well as admin. If you are seriously suffering from depression, Human Resources can arrange for a company doctor to see you, and (s)he sill advise the Company on what they can do to help you. That might mean you no longer feel you need to have your ipod at work.

No, but you should get some help -- you shouldn't have to listen to your ipod at work to make you feel better. Do you not like your job? If not, get a new one!

Maybe you should tell him what's up, but if he let you do it he'll have to let everyone else continue also. He'll probably instruct you to get some help. That's what I would do if I was your boss.
