You need to increase the protein in the cats diet and reduce carbohyrate. Commercial "diet" foods have it ***-backward. Canned food is the best option and a high quality one at that. No Fancy Feast, Whiskas, Friskies and such.
Natural Balance has a high quality canned food with quite a few varieties in "flavor". Stay away from the fishy ones except for maybe one can a week. Wellness is also a good canned food as is Lick Your Chops. One six-oz can a day is enough for a cat. Your cat will lose weight when you get the unnecessary grains out of his diet.
Iams and Science Diet are also poor quality foods as they use by-product meat from the least nutritious parts of the chicken. Go to www.thepetcenter.com and read the article there on feline obesity and also Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Feline Obesity" at www.littlebigcat.com.

Our vet recommends IAMS, or Perfect balance formula for overweight cats. Also watch the cats scrap intake and if it is an indoor cat make sure it gets enough excercise. Also watch for kidney problems if your cat is getting older and only gets dry cat food. It needs wet and dry diet both.

Wellness canned food is what I used to help my chubby cat slim down, and it worked beautifully.
Adding a good quality canned food to your cat's diet should help it lose weight - see this link for an explanation: http://www.catinfo.org

Hi there... I have a few questions for you... and they will hopefully be able to answer your question.
1) Is your kitty on wet food?
If so, don't cut the wet food out altogether, although you should reduce it for sure. Wet food has a higher fat content to it, and as such, despite the amount of moisture that will be in the canned food which kitties do need, the fat content is working to your detriment. If you go to your local bulk food store, or health food store, and ask them to show you where the insoluble (not sure of spelling - but that's phonetically spelled) bran is. Sprinkle maybe a half teaspoon into kitty's wet food. Bran will help keep things moving with respect to the bowels as we all know, and will help to rid the intestines and colon of any build up of solid waste.
If kitty is solely on dry food, go to your local pet store and actually read the labels on the foods. The types of food that are referenced in the other answers are good choices, but you need to see what is best for your kitty, and going through 7 different types of food will only impair your kitty's digestive system and possibly cause issues that you don't want to have to deal with. (Diarrhea and constipation are the two main ones that you could end up dealing with.)
You will want to look for the following:
1) HIGH PROTEIN - Look for a protein content that is at LEAST 25% of the formula. Look at the ingredient list. Is the first ingredient a protien (chicken, fish, etc) or is it a filler (corn, sorghum, wheat, etc). You want a protein to be the first, if not the first couple of ingredients in your kitty's food.
2) LOW FAT - Look for a food that has a max. crude fat % of 10% or less. The lower the fat content, the better.
3) FIBER - FIBER, FIBER, FIBER! The higher the fiber content, the better! Sure, bran keeps you moving, but it also works the other way too. It helps to regulate the bowels, and as such, keeps the old stuff outta there, and helps the new stuff move through faster, thus enabling kitty (and us too for that matter) to move better, have more energy and less problems in that department. (what a thing to talk about, huh? poop!)
4) You will also want to look at the ASH content of the food. Anything with a low ash %age is good, as this will help to prevent any crystals or anything forming in the bladder.
5) Finally, constant access to fresh, clean water. This is vital to not just kitty but for all of us as well.
Lots of play time, cuddles and kisses are vital to feeling healthy and losing weight for kitty too.
Good luck!

20 lbs is unquestionably too a lot for a cat. sure remember to placed him on nutrition habitual nutrition (dry).. what maximum persons dont be attentive to is that once you look on the feeding training on the lower back of the bag, you bypass via ways a lot the cat could weigh, no longer how a lot he does.. so in case your cat could be at 10 lbs, then feed him the quantity a 10lb cat could get!! He would possibly no longer consume it at first simply by fact it wont be as tasty.. you may combination it alongside with your cutting-edge nutrition, and steadily shrink the quantity of the common nutrition till he's in basic terms ingesting the nutrition habitual nutrition. additionally, dont assume ends up in one day! a million pound to a cat is a stable 5-10lbs to us!! Plus cats are lazy, you cant precisely take them on a walk like a canines, so wait and notice and carry on with it! provide him the long life he merits!

Purina One worked great for our 3 cats. They all slimmed down, their hair got really soft and shiny, and they are a lot more active. They love it and it's the only food they will eat now.

Science diet, or Nutro. These two brands allow your animal to eat less but still get the nutrition they need.

royal canin-i think it is just a step down from needing a prescription for it. see your vet and ask about it. whatever you do don't crash diet your cat they can develop some disease that can eventually kill them if you try to make them lose weight too fast. sorry i don't remember the name of the disease.
