I am going to Scotland at the beginning of March to see my partner and sort out moving up there. We would like to get married while i'm there in a registary office. Could anybody tell me how much notice the registrar needs before the wedding.

Thanks to all of you who answered, we have booked the wedding today and will be getting married on the 15th of March. I just have to send paperwork to them.

In England it takes a while, so I'd call now and hope they have a spare space, people book them years in advance sometimes, so good luck.

I'm getting married in Scotland on the 16th of Feb 2007. I submitted the forms by post on Jan 22. The rule a Gretna is at least 15 days before the ceremony. I don't live in the UK but I am a UK Citizen, as is my fiance. We are getting married at Gretna - I don't know if there are differences any where else in Scotland but we have not been living in the UK for the preceding time to the wedding and we have not been in person to the Registration office. My wedding is all booked and sorted and we don't have to turn up until the day. As I say, this may only apply to Gretna. We didn't look into getting married any where else. The people at Gretna were very helpful and I would recommend them to you.

Notice should be handed in four weeks in advance of the marriage and six weeks if either partner has been married before. The minimum period is 15 days before the date of the proposed marriage, but if you leave things as late as this you could be faced with the need to postpone the marriage.
It is not necessary for both parties to attend personally at the Registrar’s office to submit marriage notices, but at least one of the parties must attend personally before the date of the marriage to finalise arrangements with the Registrar who may need further information before the marriage can proceed.
This information serves as a general guide only. For further information contact the Registrar General, General Register Office, New Register House, Edinburgh EH1 3YT.
Not sure waht part of scotland you're going to but you will ahve to check with the local council.

I thought it was 21 days but not certain. Unsure where you will be in Scotland but it is Scottish Law so any Scottish Registry Office will advise you. Here is the tele no for the Registry Office, Park Circus, Glasgow - 0141 287 8350. If you are not having to marry in a particular town Park Circus is really lovely, some in smaller towns are a bit dingy and basic. All the best.

You have to give 15 days notice of intent to marry. Get forms from www.gro-scotland.gov.uk and hand them in to registrar at least 15 days before. That's just the legal side of course - you would have to make sure they have a free slot to actually perform the ceremony.

both of you have to be in UK for seven days before you can file a notice to marry...then in Scotland, you have to wait for 14 days after the filing of the notice to get married....this applies if both are british citizens

"You are advised to submit your marriage notice 4 - 6 weeks before you intend to marry." Read this: http://www.2-in-2-1.co.uk/php-bin/jump.php?linkid=66 :-)
