I'm going to take a course on photography and I'm looking for a certain type of camera. I saw one at Walmart that I like (although I don't like walmart). It's a digital camera, but it has the place to put regular film in, also. Before I buy this camera, I need to know if there's a better camera I could buy. My limit is $200 (I know, cheap). I'm not into those little bitty cigarette pack-sized cameras. I need something sturdy but reliable with the option of removable lens. I've contacted every local photographer and they were absolutely no help. It would be awesome if someone with photography experience could help me on this!

I keep wondering what camera you saw in WallyWorld that shoots film as well as digital. I have to believe you are mistaken about that. There was a Kodak APS film camera that showed you the picture on the back screen, but that was review only, the image was only recorded on film. Hassy makes a medium format camera with an interchangeable digital back, needless to say, you won't be finding something like that at a regular retailer,

No $200 digicam will have interchangeable lenses. You have to have an SLR for that. You can get a Nikon D40 with the kit lens for about $600 at B & H Photo. Or you can visit www.keh.com to look for a used camera.

If you can use a film camera, they are abundant and cheap, you can get a great used film SLR for pennies on the dollar. Or a new Canon film Rebel for under $200 at WalMart

Go to www.dpreview.com or www.stevesdigicams.com to research different cameras by features, specs, and see reviews.

Good luck!

Wiith any entry level photography course it is not a good idea to buy a camera prior to finding out how the course is setup. Will you be working in a modern digital darkroom or will you be doing traditional black and white silverprints? Furthermore, most photography departments whether it be at an art institute or a university have cameras available to students for checkout so sometimes it may not be necessary to go out and buy a camera immediately. However, when you do decide to purchase go used and go with a reputable company like Keh.com There you can get a relatively good camera in the price range you are looking at. Instead of calling around town and asking photographers what you should buy just contact the instructor of the course.

you need an slr type camera if you need removable lenses. one of those small digital camera's won't cut it and most classes won't allow it.

try going to a couple places like ritz, walmart, kits, wolf and pic the salespersons brain. one of those places might have a digital slr beginer kit but i doubt it. for that price your looking at a regular slr. i put a link in for some of the cheapest ones i found online. canon and nikon are what i would recomend.

another idea would be to go to your local camera shop that sells used and buy a used camera your money will go further.

A good beginner camera (film only) is the Cannon Rebel or a Nikon N55 (they're basically the same camera). each are around $200. you want to buy an SLR camera.
check used dealers or pawn shops in your area. I would purchase something cheap, because if you stick with photography, you want to buy a new camera later anyways...when you know more about them, and know what is important to you in a camera.

I don't believe a digital camera with removeable lenses exists for $200. You might try looking on Ebay for used ones, but even they are going to be high.

Believe it or not, Kodak makes a pretty good digital camera for those on a budget. Check them out.

Go to camera stores that take trade ins or buy used equipment. Usually, they have perfectly fine old slr cameras at a reasonable price.
