The FAA requires that children 2 and over have their own seat on an airplane, As for a car seat, if you are planning on using one make sure yours is marked OK for aircraft...it will be on the side of your car seat. I just took a flight with my 22 month old daughter and found on out long international flight going that in her car seat she did not have much leg room, and the person in front of could not recline at all. On the short trip (Aprox 2 hour flight) I decided to go without the car seat (The airlines will check this for you and it does not count in the number of pieces of luggage you have..neither does a stroller). After trying the flight with and without the car seat, we went on out return trip without the car seat. I did have a few moments of trying to distract long enough during take off and landing to keep her in the seat belt with no Dora DVD, but I found looking out the window and food made for smooth transitions of my takeoff and landing time. No car seat also let us use the tray that is on the back of the seats...otherwise the car seat sits to high, we were also able to get up easier and get on and off the plane easier no lugging around a big seat. Good luck! and enjoy the flight.

2 and older are required to have their own seat but you're not required to have a car seat. If you need to travel with a car seat, I found this great product in Parenting magazine called CARES. It's a harness/belt thing that straps on to the seat and through the belt on the seat. It's so much better than lugging a car seat through the airport and my son is so tall, he's always kicking the seat in front while in the car seat! Check out the website-www.kidsflysafe.com. It's approved by the FAA and all airlines will allow it. Good luck!

Having traveled quite frequently with my children, YES, you need a car seat!!!! Obviously, you'll need it when you land if you plan on being in a car at all, and there is absolutely no way to keep a two year old still for a long plane ride (or a short one, for that matter) without a car seat. For your sanity, and those around you, take your car seat!!!!
And it is NOT a hassle to get through security at all. The security officer will usually take it from you, flip it over and push it through the scanner. It's more of a hassle to take your shoes off than it is to get a car seat through.

He will need his own seat but you are not required to bring a carseat...but there are some pros and cons to this:
1. It costs more
2. You have the extra seat for storage if he does sit on your lap (which will be nice if you bring the carseat)
Although depending on how far you are traveling and if you will be using a rental car when you get there or not...it is a complete hassle trying to get a carseat through security.
If you will be renting a car and need the seat try to check it if your son will do fine sitting in his seat or on your lap for the whole flight.

Yes, you have to buy a seat for a 2 year old (and the airline can ask for proof if you try to say he is under 2, but looks close). You don't have to bring a car seat onto the plane for him to sit in. Check the airline's website for each one's policy.

Yes, he has to have his own seat. You probably don't want a car seat, but you want some sort of chair "cover" with a good seat belt. This is an excellent product (below) that can be a stroller, or can change into a flight seat!

He will be required to have his own seat, and it's safer if you put him in the carseat.
I just recommend bringing the portable DVD player.
