Why are people so obsessed with procreation/having kids?

To me its almost like a cult-like mentality. Hell, one of neighbors the other day took out a 100K home equity loan to help pay for medical expenses to help her get pregnant........disturbing. I mean she doesn't live on a farm so she doesn't those "farm hands" to survive.....I just don't get it. Why are people so obsessed with procreation/having kids?

And yes, if you weren't so dumb, you'd know that mother nature made it so that the human race will survive, because you're not going to be here forever, so what do you have to show for it?

I don't think its an obsession, thats not the way I see. There are so many people out there that can have children, and can't, and its a real let down to those that can't. I mean how would you feel if someone told you that you can't reproduce? That your never going to be a parent? I mean we all are children with parents, and once we become adults its our desire to have our own children, keep our family tree growing. When someone gets slapped in the face that they can't have children, its painful and some people will go to all lengths to have children, as they want to have a family and share their love with their offsprings. And to some people, money just doens't matter, its not an obsession cause someone went in debt to have a child, its just whats necessary. I mean if you were sick, would you be obsessed because you had to take out a loan for treatment? No, and neither are your neighbours. Just be positive for them, and if you can't, then stay out of their business. Some people can get pregnant easy, some can't.

I don't get it either. There was some woman on Oprah last week. Her life long dream is to have children & they've spent tons of $ to get pregnant. She just wants a child to love. Hmmm, then you'd think instead of spending thousands on in-vitro you'd use that money to adopt, and then you'd have a child to love. Oh wait, somebody elses child wouldn't be good enough for you. You want your own because you think your genes are superior!
Some women really are obsessed and they wind up losing their savings, and often their marriages over it.
For some women, that is their only goal in life, to reproduce.
Sad, isn't it? Nothing wrong with having children if you want them & can support them. It's just sad that that's the only thing those women can be fullfilled with. Think of the pathetic lives they must have if nothing else brings them joy.

I think this obsession is totally cultural. How many ads do you see every day where a married couple isn't shown with at least one kid? It's drilled into people's heads since they are in diapers themselves that they must reproduce at all costs, otherwise their lives are pointless. .

Maybe it's because it's the ONE thing most human beings can do and get an expected result. And if your not one of those it's mentally devastating not being able to have children if you want them.

Human beings are mammals, it's mammals nature to mate. We live our lives to find a partner and mate, not true for everybody but most. It's something that most people just long to have. We have this in us to keep the species alive.

It's simply a dream for most people, such as having a good career, or nice car. It's just what some people want.

I think we are all struggling to find purpose in life and I guess people feel like if they have a child they helping that child to grown and learn.

i think alot of it is "you have to have a kid to be fulfilled". Just like career women..they want thier career and kids too..and in reality one of them will suffer.
