I think people try to hard to be something they are not. You are not Jesus and factually most Christians do not really want to be like Jesus Christ, they just say the would like to be like him and do nothing to be like him.
Let us examine the facts, most of his life he was a carpenter, today that is equal to being a construction worker or a cabinet maker. Both jobs do not pay so well for most in this trade, we can call this a middle class job or maybe a poor man's job to have to work physically with your hands.
Secondly he started a new job preaching at age 30 years old, and he preached doctrine that made him very unpopular in Jewish circles so much so that the Jews often toke him out of town to stone him. So he could not preach in towns any more, so he always preached in the country with no building or roof over his head and no place to live, very much like a hippie living off of nature. He does this for about 3 years and then starts telling his friends crazy things like you have to eat my flesh to enter heaven because his group of friends was too big (82 Disciples), so now 70 left him and only 12 remain, many of these left are related to him and his family. Sounds a little like Noah and his family only being saved. Now when the hour of greatest testing troubles and trials comes to Jesus and ONLY four people stay with him 3 women and only ONE MAN (John the beloved), the 3 women were all named Mary which means bitterness?
This event is your crowning achievement in life to die for others that hate you and speak evil of you, but some how this all has purpose and meaning to your invisable God dying at age 33-1/2 on a cross naked and beaten with no person to care for you, and to know you will not have children.
I cannot see many Christians following this example today?
But ministers and priest, they prefer the money that comes from preaching a loving and gentle Jesus that would not harm a soul, rather than the God of the Bible.
I think Jesus Christ was a fanatic and so am I, but I do nothing in moderation, but for most people this moderation is the Golden Rule we should all live by.

First of all that would not make any sense if you apply the modern definition of "moderation".

Check out the original text, the original greek text, the original idiomatic expression for moderation, and the meaning of the English definition in 16ll. Shakespeare anyone? Yes Shakespeare and his band of writers were certianly influencial in 1611 during the time the Bible was first translated into English.

sorry for the rambling.

In 1611 "moderation" meant "kindness".

Now, does the verse make more sense?

Some cults, like the menonites and Amish, base their entire religion on their misunderstanding of the term "moderation in all things". They refuse to show happiness, or to take advantage of most modern conveniences. They imply that they must suffer.

However, Jesus said if the salt loses it's flavor, spit it out. He was saying he didn't respect mealy mouths who would not take a stand and get excited, and well I am sure you get the point.

added: see how "mourning" illustrates that applying the modern definition to the expression "moderation" would be a heck of a wrong way to approach things.

Of couse, please read this hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Book 039, Number 6760:

Abu Huraira reported Gods Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: None amongst you would attain salvation purely because of his deeds. A person said: God's Messenger, even you also. Thereupon he said: Yes. Not even I, but that God wraps me in Mercy, but you should act with moderation. This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Bukair b. al-Ashajj with a slight variation of wording.

Book 039, Number 6765:

Abu Huraira reported God's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Observe moderation in deeds (and if it is not possible, try to be near moderation) and understand that none amongst you can attain salvation because of his deeds alone. They said: God's Messenger, not even you? Thereupon he said: Not even I, but that God should wrap me in His Mercy and Grace.

Book 41, Number 4758:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Good way, dignified good bearing and moderation are the twenty-fifth part of Prophecy.

Peace Be With You

"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

Moderation is all things is dangerous. Would you be moderate in the war on terror? Will you be moderate in protecting the Bill of Rights?
Will you choose moderation over faithfulness in marriage? Need any more examples?

In a way, yes. Some become overzealous in the legalism of it all, some become so caught up in the emotionalism religion can create that they lose sight of why they are even on this planet lol.

It should. Many people are so in tuned to be religious, that they see past the things they are supposed to pay attention to.

Yes. Baha'u'llah said that whatever extends beyond the limits of moderation, ceases to have a beneficial effect.

It would be nice, but most people dive all in to the extreme with religion, going for what feels good over what makes sense.

No not exactly In religiousness the motto is "All things in excess."
If you are church people, the following things should always be in excess:
Self-righteousness
Hypocrisy
Judgment and condemnation
Bigotry
Conspicuous holiness
General disregard
