it is very common on 41te trans for the input and output sensors to go out. with this being an 89 the easiest way to tell is with a scan tool double check that all connectors are plugged in tightly including the solenoid pack screw. if you just put this in you should have a warranty with jasper or whoever installed it. most auto zones will check for dtc's for free

By saying won't shift out of low gear, I imagine you mean second, and only second. Which means the computer has pulled up a fault and set your transmission into limp mode. Have it scanned by a shop that will fix a transmission, and not one that wants to rebuild and rebuild only. Could be a cheap fix(compared to a rebuild).
