Depends on the type of gathering it was....If it was a "pot luck" where all the guests brought food to share, then you may take any leftovers of your contribution home with you. It would, however, be a nice gesture if you offered to leave it for the "host", the person who provided the location. If it was a regular hosted party and you brought food as a "gift", then you should definitely leave the leftovers with your host unless asked not to do so.

When I bring food to a party, it is a gift. I do not expect to take it home. However, if there is a lot left over and the host of the party does not want it all, I will take some home if asked by the host to do so.

When you bring food it belongs to the host/hostess.
If she/he asks would you like to take the leftovers you certainly can.
I've had people ask if they could take a little home & I always give them some to take with them.

Any food taken to a social gathering becomes the responsibility of the host except on the occasions of picnics and 'cook your own'.
One must not take food home unless invited to by the host. It is bad form to ask for the left-overs in all but the most intimate of gatherings.

In most cases I give leftovers to the host or hostess. I usually buy a cheaper plate or platter from the dollar store to serve it on.
Afterall I brought the item for a dinner party or pot luck to share. I'd probably make two batches if I wanted to keep some for myself.

Divide it I say. Or just make enough so that you have some at home already.

I ask if they want to keep it or keep some of it. I take the rest home, or ask other guests if they want to take some.

if it's a big party, i sneak a huge supply of food out, but only a big party though so they can't relly tell who did it. You don't want to look greedy.
