Sure, we read the Ted Bundy and Charlie Manson stories to our twins at bedtime, but we never talk about Hitler. I cannot imagine an appropriate time or reason to discuss Adolf Hitler with a six year old. This is the something the six year old should not be able to comprehend. The only thing I would discuss with a six year old child that even comes close to the kind of evil Hitler represents would be that there are bad people in the world, and to be cautious around strangers. I think middle school students have a difficult time understanding the monstrous nature of the Nazi philosophy and of the maniacal delusions of Hitler. I am curious. Do you know of someone who has tried to talk about this to a six year old child or younger? I can't even imagine why this would be brought up, unless there was a grandparent who was a concentration camp victim and one tried to explain the reasons why. Good question though. Like the one abortion question, it made me think.

I think at 6 its a bit too young as the child will not have the mental dexterity to understand the reasons behind why hitler did what he did and just why he was such a prominent figure in history, maybe arund the age of 9/10 kids will be able to understand just how many people died and that it was for no reason and that Hitler thought in his own crazy state of mind that he was right in doing what he was and tat a nation followed along with him. At 6 years old you should be watching power rangers and learning maths, not the horrors of history.

While the man himself is just a historical dictator, the era and what he did does bear discussion. Especially if the child is jewish. Be sensitive to what the child can handle however. The fact is that hatred is something one learns about early and anti racism anti bigotry is early started and deeply learned and felt.
As the song says
You have tgo be carfefully taught. That goes both ways. do not over emphasize anything that will terrify the child but do let the child know.
I went to the holocaust museum at age 36 and sobbed for about 6 hours. I was almost paralyzed when I visited some concentration camps. I had known about this for years but that hit home for me. So I guess it depends on the child and their ability to conceptualize and deal with things.

OMG NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a discussion topic for someone more mature, like someone in school at least. If my parents were to talk to me about that when i was 6, i would look at them in confusion and probably relate Hitler with Barney or Looney Tunes, (Since that was what i watched when i was younger). A discussion more suitable would be what you want to be when you grow up or how they are doing now. Whoever told( or will tell) their children about hitler should hold on to their thought for a couple more years..

No. A parent shouldn't even discuss Hitler with older children--he is in the history books and he should stay there....school will educate children with all they need to know about Hitler. So no, don't discuss him with any child, young or older

YES!!!! you would be shocked at how young children now are learning about stuff like sex, drugs, etc. from their "friends." Morals need to start at home. There is nothing wrong with discussing hitler because what children learn young they will keep with them forever.... that's why i believe young children need to learn Right from Wrong and not Good from Bad at a young age. our children are our future....raise them up to be confident in doing what's right, and not ashamed of who they are...these are the children that won't give into peer pressure.

I don't think as young as 6 is the right full age to learn about Hitler but i learned about it at age 11 and i was glad to learn it as young as i was so i would say around age 10 is the right full age to learn about Hitler.

it is wrong. teaching kids about these things at such a young age is more damaging than educational. these kinds of things can cause a child to have nightmares. children can fully understand the full emphasis of something like this at this age anyway. it is better to wait until they are older and either let them learn it in school or when they ask about it. then the time is right. otherwise i wouldn't worry about it too much.

I dont think discussing Hitler with your children is a specific rite of passage that is necessary full stop- its simply a piece of history that they'll learn about in school. There is no reason to emphasize him or any other dictator.

Honestly there were alot worse people than Hitler, that killed millions and millions more than Hitler. I wouldn't hesitate to answer any questions my child would have about Hitler.
Know your facts people, Hitler does not top the totem pole of bad guys when it comes to mass genocide.
