After obedience school at PetsMart I took my Jack Russell Terrier puppy to get his nails trimmed at PetsMart and when they were cutting them in front of me he was scared and was biting but they were doing it right. They then took him to the back to help get control of him so they cut his nails and I heard him yelp loudly but I thought it was just him being scared. When they were finished he was back to his regular self like nothing happened. It was untill we got home that I noticed he was missing a nail on his paw but its the one far to the side but it wasnt bleeding. Sueing is not an answer because people make mistakes so what should I do?

I would inform the Petsmart manager of what happened. I work for petco and it is our policy to inform the owners of EVERYTHING!!!! If we hit the quick we tell the owner and show them exactly where it is and how it happened. If we don't think the nails should be trimmed or we don't trim them all because some are too short we tell the owner. It is just good policy. If they hurt your dog they need to own up to it. If your dog is too scared then your dog shouldn't be there in the first place. Grooming is very traumatic for a dog. There are sharp instruments, new smells, new people, dogs barking, they've got a rope around their neck when on the table. This can be a traumatic experience for dogs.
Why did they take the dog away from you when trying to calm him down? If he was that terrified they should have stopped right there instead of wrestling with him to trim his nails. This is when accidents happen.
I wouldn't go back there again. And inform the manager of what you witnessed. Check on the nail. It would be bleeding heavily if the nail was "missing" and the dog would be in pain and would probably be licking the nail. They might have just cut it too far back. That's my guess. Especially with a squirmy dog. But even styptic powder wouldn't stop that bleeding easily. I would have a vet look at it just to be sure. Then you'll have more knowledge when you talk to the manager. And don't go to back there again. It's too traumatic for the dog now.
Were they using a dremmel? That's the safest way to trim nails...unless it's a very small dog.
You may need to start with just touching his paws lightly to let him get used to the sensation. I'm sorry this happened. I'm sure they didn't mean to do this but they still should have informed you as to what took place.
AND IT IS NEVER THE DOGS FAULT!! IT IS ALWAYS THE GROOMERS! I AM A GROOMER! AND YOU NEVER BLAME THE DOG!!!

Sounds like the dog is the problem not the groomers. Ever try to cut nails on a strange dog that is biting, scratching, thrashing and crapping on you????? Bet not, most of you would just give up. The nail most likely didn't bleed because the nail was long and hollow or they stopped any bleeding with Quick Stop powder.
Sounds like your dog needs training on how to hold still for its nails. They took the dog to the back so it would stop freaking out in front of you. Funny how dogs act different when the owner is out of site. And NO you CAN'T SUE them, for your dogs bad behavior. They got lawyers too.

i wouldn't bring him back there again but its nothing to worry about as long as it grows back within a few weeks its nothing to worry about. until then i wouldn't have him walk on cement or concrete for a while and i would also wrap up the paw so it doesn't get infecteed. if the nail doesn't grow back after a while i would bring him to the vets to make sure everything is ok. good luck and i also owna jack russel

Jack Russell? Isnt he the lead singer from Great White?
Oh...nevermind.
I wouldnt worry too much about it. They might have clipped it back a bit too far, but if its not bothering your dog and its not bleeding, maybe make a trip to the vet to ask them about it.

I would not do anything...as you said people make mistakes.

What probably happened is he jerked just as the groomer was cutting, and caused his nail to slip further into the nail trimmers. It will grow back.
